LEBANON, Tenn. - The third-ranked Embry-Riddle Eagles couldn't solve the problem of Cumberland starter Stevie Smith as the Bulldog pitcher shutout the Eagles, 4-0 in a complete game effort on Monday at Woody Hunt Stadium. The Eagles (18-12) managed just six hits against Smith while the No. 10 Bulldogs (18-11) took advantage of six walks issued by Clayton Wagner and found some timely hits in the win over ERAU.

Kevin Lindheim collected the first hit of the contest with a double in the first, but Smith struck out Darryl Knight to end the Eagle threat and send his team to the plate.

Wagner found himself in a jam after hitting the first batter and surrendering a base hit to the next CU batter, but after a fly out, Darryl Knight gunned down a runner at second on an attempted double steal for the second out. Wagner stranded a Bulldog at third with a harmless fly ball to left center.

Smith ended a big Eagle threat in the third by getting a ground ball double play with runners at first and second to get his team back in the dugout. The Bulldogs gave their pitcher a lift by loading the bases against Wagner in the next half inning and scored twice when Tyler Anderson singled up the middle as CU took a 2-0 lead.

Knight narrowly missed a solo homer in the fourth as his hit ball went foul, but singled to left before an error allowed two Eagles to be on base with one out. A shoestring grab in center and a close call at first on a pick off ended the Embry-Riddle threat as the Eagles continued to trail, 2-0.

Wagner gave up two hits and a walk as the Bulldogs loaded the bags again in the fifth before Anderson collected his third RBI of the contest with a fielder's choice as CU increased its lead to 3-0.

Knight came up three feet short of another near homerun in the Eagle sixth, but the ball died at the fence as the Eagles went three-up, three-down in the frame. Cumberland added another run in the bottom of the sixth after two two-out walks and a base hit gave CU a 4-0 cushion.

Hunter Bruehl doubled with J Rhet Montana on base in the top of the seventh to put Eagles on second and third, but Smith recorded his fourth strikeout of the game to strand the pair on the bases.

After a leadoff double in the last of the seventh, Bruce Wong came in and got out of the inning thanks in part to a 1-6-3 double play to end the inning.

The Eagles got a one-out hit from Montana in the ninth, but a double play ended the game as the Bulldogs claimed the shutout win.

Wagner (1-2) suffered the loss for the Blue and Gold, throwing six innings, allowing four runs on seven hits and six walks.

The Eagles and Bulldogs meet once more, tomorrow, March 18 at 2 p.m. (CT) followed by a neutral site game against Oklahoma Wesleyan at 6 p.m. (CT).
