DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. - The No. 14 Bellevue Bruins erupted for four runs in the 12th inning on Sunday night at Embry-Riddle's Sliwa Stadium, breaking open what was a pitching duel for 11 frames, downing No. 3 ERAU, 5-1. The Bruins (5-5) broke a deadlock that had lasted since the eighth inning as the Eagles (10-8) stranded 11 runners in the game, including the go-ahead run at second or third three times over the last five innings.
The Eagles and Bruins will meet again tomorrow, Monday, March 3 at 6 p.m.
ERAU's
Clayton Wagner and Bellevue's Brennan Henry were outstanding for their respective clubs, allowing a total of two runs on four hits with 11 strikeouts each. Neither team recorded a base hit until Kyle Kinman laid down a bunt for a base hit in the fourth, but the Bruins couldn't capitalize as a fielder's choice and caught stealing ended the threat for the visitors.
Darryl Knight threw out his second runner at third base in the fifth inning when Zach Clark was caught stealing, but the Eagles couldn't use the momentum and stranded a pair of runners in the last of the fifth.
Wagner struck out the side in the top of the seventh and the Blue and Gold finally broke through in its half of the inning.
Jordan Johnson wore a pitch to lead off the frame, moving to second on a
Liam Goodall sacrifice bunt before taking third on a wild pitch. After Henry struck out
Colt Hankamer for the second out,
Kyle Chastain beat out an infield single to short as Johnson touched home for a 1-0 Eagle lead.
Joe Mancuso began the eighth with a single to short, and Clark, pinch running for the DH, stole second with one out before Wagner issued his only walk of the night to Tyler Blood.
David Lidyard relieved Wagner and after a wild pitch moved both runners up a base, Lidyard induced a soft line drive to Johnson at second for the second out. Lidyard appeared to have ended the inning when Levi Cartas was called out at first by the field umpire on a ground ball to third. However, the home plate umpire overruled his partner, saying
Hunter Bruehl pulled his foot off the base, allowing the Bruin run to score and knot the game at 1-1.
J Rhet Montana stood at third after a walk, steal and balk by new BU pitcher Steve Sarcone, but a pop up with two outs ended the inning with a 1-1 score.
As the game progressed to extra innings, the pitching dominance by both teams continued until the 12th when Clark beat out an infield single before a hit-and-run put Bruins on the corners with one out.
Ronnie Lozada was tasked to relieve Lidyard and a perfectly placed sacrifice bunt drove in one BU run before a double plated another for Bellevue. A passed ball and a second double accounted for the final two runs in the inning as Bellevue enjoyed a 5-1 cushion.
Sarcone worked perfectly through the Eagle 12th, facing the minimum as the Bruins secured the top-15 win.
Sarcone (1-1) got the win for Bellevue, throwing the final five innings with just two hits allowed and four strikeouts. Lidyard (2-1) was given the loss in four innings of relief, surrendering two runs on four hits with three Ks.
Chastain, Montana and Johnson were the only Eagles to record a hit in the contest as the two teams combined to strike out 29 times.
The loss snapped a six-game winning streak against BU for the Eagles, as well as a five-game winning streak in 2014.
