DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. -
Stetson Nelson tossed a two-hit shutout as the No. 3 Embry-Riddle Eagles beat Indiana Tech 2-0 at Sliwa Stadium on Friday night. The win gave ERAU Head Coach
Randy Stegall his 300th victory while at Embry-Riddle, coming against his former team Indiana Tech where he spent two seasons as skipper (2006-07).
The Eagles (21-13) managed two runs in the fifth and that was more than enough for Nelson (5-2) who took a no-hitter into the sixth and allowed just two total hits in his third shutout of the season. Indiana Tech (9-9-1) put just four runners on base against Nelson, facing 19 first-pitch strikes in the loss.
The two teams meet again tomorrow, Saturday, March 22 for a twin bill starting at 1 p.m.
After a strikeout of the leadoff Warrior in the first, Nelson worked around an Eagle error that put Justin Kalusa on base, inducing two groundouts to end the threat and put his team in the dugout.
Clay Wallace was nearly as good as Nelson through the first four innings, scattering three hits and leaving three Blue and Gold baserunners on the bags en route to a 0-0 game heading into the fifth. However, Wallace got a big defensive assist in the third when
Kevin Lindheim singled through the right side with
Liam Goodall at second. Goodall was waved around third as the Eagles attempted to take a 1-0 lead, but the Warrior right fielder Bryan Brudi gunned Goodall down at the dish for the final out of the inning, keeping the game scoreless.
Nelson was forced to work around another ERAU error in the fifth, getting a pair of groundouts and a strikeout before his team gave him the only runs he needed in the home half of the frame.
Jordan Johnson singled up the middle before moving to second on a
Matt Jacobs sacrifice bunt, but after a Wallace strikeout, the Eagles looked as if they would strand Johnson in scoring position until
Kyle Chastain stepped to the plate. Chastain took a 0-1 pitch through the left side of the infield, plating Johnson before Chastain astutely took second on the throw in from left field. Chastain swiped third during Goodall's at-bat, and after the junior drew a two-out walk, Chastain was able to score on a wild pitch to make it 2-0 Embry-Riddle.
Kalusa broke up Nelson's no-hit bid with two outs in the sixth, tripling to left center before Romer Portes flew out to right field for the last out of the inning.
Connor McLaughlin relieved Wallace in the seventh, and despite surrendering a hit and walk in the inning, got a 5-4-3 double play to keep his team down by just two runs.
Nelson threw five pitches in the eighth to retire the side, but Jacob Dunichay opened the ninth with a single up the middle, bringing the tying run to the plate for Indiana Tech. Kalusa worked a full count against Nelson and appeared to check his swing on ball four, but an appeal to the field umpire resulted in a strikeout for Nelson. A fielder's choice and foul out for the next two batters gave Nelson his third complete game of the season.
Nelson threw 108 pitches for the victory, giving up two hits without issuing a walk while fanning eight Warrior batters. Chastain finished 2-for-4 with an RBI, a run scored and two stolen bases while Johnson went 2-for-3 with a run scored.
Wallace (2-3) was tagged with the loss, tossing 6.0 innings with two runs on six hits and one walk with six Ks.
Stegall's 300th win comes 408 games into his Embry-Riddle career for a winning percentage of .735. In his eight-year coaching career spanning both Indiana Tech and Embry-Riddle, Stegall stands at 369-152-2 (.707).
