DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. - Senior
Colt Hankamer lined a first pitch single to right centerfield in the bottom of the ninth as
Jordan Johnson raced home to give the Embry-Riddle Eagles a 2-1 victory over Northwestern Ohio in walkoff fashion on Tuesday night at ERAU's Sliwa stadium. The Eagles (24-14) got a great performance on the mound from
Tyler Cyr who held the Racers (13-9) to just four hits and one run as ERAU managed a split of the two-game series with UNOH.
Hankamer drove in Johnson from second with Tyler Eaton (0-1) on the mound, with just the fourth hit of the night for the Blue and Gold. The Racers used four pitchers in a staff day performance on the mound, but it was Eaton who took the loss for UNOH.
The bottom of the ninth started with a single from
J Rhet Montana, the first base hit for the Eagles since the sixth, and after Johnson's sacrifice bunt attempt was misplayed by the pitcher, throwing to second trying to force out Montana, both runners were safe with no outs.
Hunter Bruehl didn't fare as well in his sac bunt attempt as Montana was cut down at third for the first out of the inning. However, Hankamer wasted no time in lifting the Eagles to a walkoff victory with his single.
Cyr faced the minimum in the first frame before his offense gave him a 1-0 lead in the home half of the inning when
Kevin Lindheim recorded a sacrifice fly to score
Kyle Chastain from third after Chastain walked, moved to second on a wild pitch and third on a sacrifice bunt from
Liam Goodall.
Cyr cruised through the first three innings, but the Eagles were held in check by Engel Diaz, keeping the score at 1-0 in favor of the hosts.
Overturned calls at first base have seemed to be one of the themes of the season for the Eagles, and in the UNOH fourth, that proved again to be the case. With one out on the board, Ben Schubert grounded a ball into right field where Johnson tracked it down and spun to throw out Schubert at first. The field umpire originally called Shubert out on the play, but after a request from UNOH's Head Coach to meet with his partner, the call was overturned, allowing Schubert to stand at first. A single from Jose Cruz followed by a single from James Cardona drove in the tying run in the form of Schubert as the Racers knotted the game at 1-1.
Cory Cook gunned down two Eagles in the last of the fourth as they tried to steal second, and in back-to-back innings the Blue and Gold had the go-ahead runner at third and failed to take the lead.
Cyr retired 11 straight from the fourth through the eighth innings and did some of his best pitching of the game after Brett Akins got to third with one out in the top of the eighth frame. Cyr struck out the next two batters in Zyler Cosby and Alex Leach, stranding the go-ahead run at third.
Stetson Nelson relieved Cyr in the top of the ninth, throwing just five pitches to get three quick outs before the bottom of the ninth rally for the Eagles.
Nelson (7-2) tossed a perfect ninth while Cyr threw eight innings, allowing one run on four hits with one walk and six strikeouts.
The Eagles return to Sun Conference play this weekend with a trip to Ave Maria, Fla. to take on Ave Maria beginning with a 3 p.m. game on Friday and a twin bill starting at 12 p.m. on Saturday.
