Mets Choose Knight in 14th Round of MLB Draft

| By:
NEW YORK, N.Y. - Embry-Riddle junior Darryl Knight became the second Eagle to be selected in the 2014 Major League Baseball Draft when the New York Mets made him their 14th round choice on the third day of the 40-round draft. Knight, a catcher from Orlando, Fla., joins right-handed pitcher Daniel Poncedeleon as Blue and Gold draftees after Poncedeleon was selected in the ninth round by the St. Louis Cardinals on Friday evening.

Knight is coming off a junior season in which he was named a first team NAIA All-American after posting a .338 batting average with 72 hits, 13 doubles, four triples and 15 home runs. Knight's 15 homers broke an Embry-Riddle single-season record and ranked fourth in the nation in his first year wearing an Eagle uniform. Knight drove in 60 runs and collected 138 bases with a .648 slugging percentage and .431 on-base percentage thanks to his team-leading 27 walks and 13 hit by pitches. Knight was also stellar behind the plate, fielding .989 on 440 chances with 374 putouts and 61 assists while throwing out 18 runners on the bases.

Knight was the 415th overall selection in the draft which would have been the highest-ever by an Eagle before Poncedeleon's ninth round selection. Representing just the second Eagle catcher taken in the draft, Knight is also the second Eagle to be taken by the Mets as Jonathan Kountis was a 19th round choice in 2010.

2014 marks the fifth season that multiple Eagles have gone in the MLB Draft. For a complete list of Embry-Riddle draftees, visit the Draft History page.
