DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. - The 11th-ranked Embry-Riddle Eagles wasted a solid starting pitching performance from
Tyler Cyr, as well as multiple offensive chances late in a 3-2 extra inning loss to No. 12 Bellevue on Sunday night. The Eagles (11-6) led 2-0 before an eighth-inning rally tied it for the Bruins (7-2) and a 10th inning run couldn't be answered by the Blue and Gold in the loss. The Eagles stranded 13 runners in the contest, including the potential go-ahead or tying run at third base in each of the last three innings to drop their third conseucitve game to Bellevue in the all-time series.
The two teams will meet up again tomorrow night at 6 p.m. at Sliwa Stadium.
Cyr and his counterpart Steve Sarcone were fantastic on the mound for their respective teams, neither allowing a hit until a
Dalton Hughes single in the third inning, while Cyr to a no-hitter all the way to the sixth.
Embry-Riddle first threatened in the third after Hughes' hit.
Kyle Zirbes, running for Hughes, moved to second on a wild pitch and then to third on a balk with just one out. However, a ground ball to third base resulted in Zirbes being thrown out at home to preserve the scoreless tie.
Cyr worked around several jams of his own making thanks to walks, but sent the game to the bottom of the sixth without allowing a run.
ERAU scored twice in the bottom of the sixth, the first on a
Liam Goodall triple to right, scoring
Enderson Velasquez, and the second run came on a
Matt Jacobs double to left center, plating Goodall for a 2-0 Eagle lead.
Cyr retired the side in order in the seventh, but ran into trouble in the eighth as the first two Bruins reached in the inning.
Zac Grotz came in with two on and no outs and got a groundout for the first out, but an RBI groundout in the next at-bat cut the lead to 2-1 before a wild pitch chased home the tying run.
In the last of the eighth Velasquez walked to start the inning before moving all the way to third on a failed pickoff attempt by the new Bruin pitcher Anthony Lovato. A walk issued to Jacobs put runners on the corners with one out but Lovato ended the inning by getting a ground ball double play off the bat of
Kyle Buchanan.
Grotz faced the minimum in the ninth and it looked like the home team would earn a walkoff win when
A.J. Mazzurco stood at third with two outs, but a harmless groundout ended the inning and sent the game to extras.
A walk followed by a base hit put two Bruins on base, and after a single to left the runner from second was sent home, but a strike from Goodall to Hughes at the palte beat the runner and kept the game knotted at 2-2. However, Bellevue struck in the next at-bat with a single to shallow center, pushing the go-ahead run across the plate.
Velasquez started the bottom of the 10th with a single through the right side before Goodall was hit by a pitch. A perfect sacrifice bunt from Jacobs put Eagles at second and third with one out as the Bruins went once again to the bullpen. Connor Chick walked Buchanan before he fell behind Mazzurco 3-1, but the ERAU DH popped up to third and Chick secured the win for the Bruins by striking out
Cody Bogart with the bases loaded.
Velasquez and Goodall each collected two hits for the Eagles while Grotz (3-1) was tagged with the loss in three frames of relief. Cyr worked seven innings, allowing just two runs on two hits with five strikeouts.
