WEST PALM BEACH, Fla. - For the first time since 2006 the Embry-Riddle Eagles were swept in a Sun Conference series, falling to Northwood, 4-1 and 5-1 on Saturday as the Seahawks completed the sweep of the Eagles. Embry-Riddle (12-9, 4-4) totalled just four runs over the weekend. Northwood (19-5, 10-2) was the first Eagle league opponent to sweep the Blue and Gold away from Sliwa Stadium since 2001.
Game 1 • NU 4, ERAU 1Tyler Cyr (1-2) allowed just one earned run in 6.1 innings, but three unearned runs doomed the Eagles in the day's opener. All four of Northwood's runs came in the fourth and the Eagles couldn't solve Steven Bruce (5-0), scoring just once on seven hits against the Seahawk starter.
Dalton Hughes drew a bases loaded walk in the second to score the first run of the contest for the Eagles, but ERAU couldn't get any more runs as Bruce got a fielder's choice force out at home and a strike out to end the threat.
Both Cyr and Bruce worked scoreless third frames, but a leadoff walk and double to start the fourth for NU got the hosts in business. A hit batter loaded the bases before an RBI single tied the game at 1-1. Brandon Crawford grounded a ball to third in the next at-bat, but
Jake Cavender's throw home was high as two runners touched home before a sac fly scored the final run of the inning.
ERAU stranded nine runners in the game, including two in the sixth and never threatened again as Alan Carey came in to close the game out in the ninth and faced the minimum.
Clayton Wagner threw just one pitch to get out of a jam in the seventh, rolling up a nice double play to end the inning and
Zac Grotz pitched a perfect eighth.
Cyr finished with a line of 6.1 innings, seven hits, four runs (one earned) with six strikeouts.
Game 2 • NU 5, ERAU 1Cody Faulkner held the Eagles to one run on five hits in four innings before Andres Caraveo pitched a hitless fifth through eighth frames for Northwood as they collected 10 hits in the contest.
Corey Tufts was touched up for two runs in the first inning, but was able to strike out the final two batters to end the frame and ERAU cut the deficit in half when
Matt Jacobs flew our to right for a sacrifice fly, scoring
Liam Goodall from third base.
Embry-Riddle stranded a pair in the third and the Seahawks made them pay with a run in the home-half of the inning to go up 3-1.
Faulkner was forced out of the game in the fifth when the Eagles loaded the bases with no outs, but Caraveo entered and got a line out, strike out and ground out to keep the Eagles from scoring a single run.
Goodal reached thid base with just one out in the sixth, but Caraveo struck out two more Eagles to dash ERAU's hopes in the inning.
Two more Northwood runs in the bottom of the sixth made it 5-1 and the Eagles didn't get a runner past second the rest of the way.
Tufts (3-2) went 5.1 innings with seven Ks while
Dylan Demarest finished the last 2.2 innings without allowing a run.
The Eagles will try to get back in the win column on Sunday, March 8 with a 6 p.m. contest against Saint Francis (Ill.).
