FORT MYERS, Fla. - For the sixth time in seven meetings at The Sun Conference Tournament, the Embry-Riddle Eagles took down the USCB Sand Sharks, 2-1, needing 10 innings to do so. The Eagles (33-16) stranded a season-high 16 runners on the bases, but a wild pitch in the 10th allowed
Tobias Moreno to score, giving the Blue and Gold its third extra-inning win in a tournament-opening game. The Sand Sharks (32-20) only managed three hits against
Stetson Nelson, as the senior righty went 9.2 innings to earn the victory.
The Eagles advance to Saturday's night game against the winner of third-seeded St. Thomas and fourth-seeded Southeastern at 7 p.m. The Sand Sharks will take on top-seeded Northwood on Saturday morning at 11 a.m. in an elimination game.
The Eagles loaded the bases in the first and second innings against Junior Delatorre, but both times the Sand Shark right-hander kept the Eagles off the scoreboard.
Nelson faced the minimum through three complete and his team gave him a 1-0 lead when Moreno singled to center, scoring
Kyle Buchanan from third. Delatorre escaped further damage in the inning and the Sand Sharks tied things up when Alex Bonilla broke up the no-hit bid by Nelson with an RBI single up the middle, scoring John Cloyd after Cloyd had drawn a walk and stole second and moved to third on a groundout.
Tied at 1-1, both Delatorre and Nelson settled into a pitchers' duel, and despite the Eagles putting runner after runner on base, they couldn't push the go-ahead run across the board.
Delatorre was relieved in the eighth after
Hunter Bruehl led off with a base hit, and Blake Drew committed an error and gave up a hit, loading the bases with no outs, but again, the Blue and Gold was unable to cross home.
Moreno singled to left with two outs before
Jake Cavender singled up the middle. A wild pitch from Drew advanced the runners to 2nd and 3rd and Drew then threw another pitch that got by the USCB catcher as Moreno scampered home for a 2-1 lead.
Nelson retired the first two USCB batters in the 10th before
Zac Grotz threw two pitches to get Zach Saldivar to ground out for his eighth save of the season.
Nelson (8-4) got the win, going 9.2 innings, allowing just one run on three hits with four strikeouts. Junior Delatorre went 7.0 strong innings, throwing 147 pitches. Drew (7-4) got the loss in three innings of relief.
Moreno accounted for both Eagle runs with three hits, an RBI and a run scored while Buchanan recorded two hits and tied a tournament record with three stolen bases. The Eagles stole seven total bases as a team.
