NEW YORK, N.Y. -
Zac Grotz became the first Embry-Riddle Eagle ever to be drafted by the Houston Astros as the AL West-leading club selected the Blue and Gold right-handed pitcher with their 28th round pick in the 2015 Major League Baseball Draft. Grotz joins teammate and fellow California native,
Tyler Cyr as Eagles to be drafted in 2015.
Grotz, who joined Embry-Riddle for his senior season, had a remarkable year en route to second team NAIA All-America honors. Grotz went 8-2 with nine saves in a program-record 32 appearances this year, tossing 77.2 innings, allowing only six earned runs, 12 walks and one extra-base hit (a double) with a .172 batting average against. Grotz started five times and registered two complete games, including one shutout while striking out 90 batters for the Blue and Gold.
A first team All-Sun Conference performer and a Sun Conference All-Tournament team member, Grotz was a two-time TSC Pitcher of the Week. His 0.70 ERA is an ERAU career record while his 10.49 strikeouts per nine innings ranks third all-time and his .172 opponent batting average is the second-best mark in Eagle history.
