ST. LEO, Fla. - The Embry-Riddle men's basketball team trimmed an 11-point second half deficit down to three with just two minutes left in Wednesday's game at Saint Leo, but the Lions got a clutch three-pointer from Marcus Dewberry after a broken offensive possession and the Eagles couldn't overcome the difference in a 99-92 loss to SLU at the Bowman Center. The Eagles (10-4) dropped their second straight game for the first time since the end of the 2013-14 season, despite 26 and 24 points, respectively, from
Ognjen Miljkovic and
Reed Ridder as Dewberry poured in a game-high 33 to lead the Lions (11-6) to their fourth straight win and improve to 10-2 at home.
Saint Leo shot better than 54 percent for the game, including 11-for-25 from long range, and made 20-of-23 from the charity stripe as six Lions scored in double-figures, led by Dewberry's 33. The Eagles made 43 percent of their shots from the field, but went just 1-for-8 from three in the second half, struggling from distance in the closing period for the second game in a row.
Ridder and
Daniel Kiesling opened the game with back-to-back layups, but the Lions answered quickly with five points to take a 5-4 lead at the 17:15 mark in the first, but the Eagles went back in front on a
Dalton Barnes jumper and led by one or two possessions for most of the first period thanks to 11 first-half points from Miljkovic and 10 from Ridder.
The Eagle lead grew to its biggest at seven on two occassions, both on Miljkovic buckets, but the Lions reeled off a 9-2 run around the seven-minute mark to tie the game at 30-30 on a Dewberry layup with five minutes to go before the break.
Dewberry continued to drive to the hole and get easy layups as the hosts took their biggest lead of the half at six with 3:17 left, but the Eagles were able to trim the lead to two at the break, thanks to a layup from
Joseph Gonzalez, bringing the score to 47-45 in favor of SLU.
Miljkovic, who had to play much of the first half with two fouls, was 5-for-8 from the field in the opening period, while Ridder went 4-for-6.
Coming out of the half, the Lions got a spark from Trail Pierce as the post player scored the first seven Saint Leo points as SLU ballooned its cushion to 54-47 at the 17-minute mark.
After Pierce, the Lions turned to Tyreece Brice, who, despite being held scoreless in the first half, exploded for 15 second-half points, putting his team up by 10 with an and-one completion to make it 57-47.
Embry-Riddle stayed right with the Lions, matching the home team shot-for-shot, mostly from Ridder and Miljkovic, and when Ridder made a brekaway layup at the 12:39 mark, the lead was just 65-63 for Saint Leo. However, Brice scored back-to-back buckets for the Lions and the Blue and Gold could get no closer than two possessions until just over two minutes to go.
A Dewberry layup with four and a half minutes left gave SLU an 11-point lead, but the Eagles would go on an 11-3 run over the next two minutes, including a 7-for-7 effort from the charity stripe, to make it 93-90 with 2:08 on the clock.
Dewberry's three 25 seconds later as the shot clock was running down was big as the Eagles were unable to answer with a three of their own and SLU finished the game making 3-of-4 from the free throw line for the 99-92 win.
To go along with his 26 points, Miljkovic grabbed five rebounds, while Ridder corralled six boards and dished out three assists. Barnes finished with 18 points, eight rebounds, five assists and three steals. Gonzalez was the only other Eagle in double-figures with 13 points.
The Eagles return to the ICI Center to start a three-game homestand, starting with Saturday's contest against Lynn. Game time is slated for 7 p.m.
