GUAYNABO, Puerto Rico - The Embry-Riddle men's basketball team improved to 7-4 on the season with an 80-73 win over Central Bayamon on Saturday afternoon. The Eagles built a sizable first half lead before UCB (3-1) made a late rally in the second, but the Blue and Gold held off UCB to conclude a two-win Puerto Rico trip.
The Eagles led by as many as 22 in the first half, and ultimately took a 48-29 advantage into the break, thanks to big scoring outputs from
Skyler Hogan and
Luka Majstorovic. Hogan led all scorers in the half with 16 points, includind four three-pointers, while Majstorovic added 11 points for the visitors.
ERAU scored the first points of the game on a
Shaquan McArthur dunk and would never trail in the contest, racing out to a 13-4 lead on a layup from Majstorovic with 15:46 left in the first.
The lead grew to 18 at 31-13 when
Cole Hunter got an offensive rebound and converted a layup with just over eight minutes to play in the period, and four later a Hogan jumper would give the Eagles their largest lead of the day at 42-20 before taking a 19-point cushion into the lockeroom, 48-29.
The two teams came out of the half trading baskets, but a mini-run from UCB cut its deficit to 11 on a Pedro Fournier layup with 15 minutes to play. After one of ERAU's 13 turnovers of the second half, Fournier made good on an and-one layup, trimming the Eagle lead to eight at 54-46.
ERAU fought to stay in front over the next several minutes, but UCB proved to be pesky, getting the deficit down to 58-54 with 11 minutes on the clock, but a 7-2 Eagle run over the next two minutes, capped by an and-one jumper from Hogan, pushed the Eagle lead back to nine.
Over the final nine minutes the Eagles stayed at least two possessions in front of UCB, going up double-digits at 75-65 on a
Brian Johnson dunk, but an 8-2 run by the opposition once again made it a four-point game at 77-73.
A turnover by UCB with a minute to go led to a Johnson layup with 43 seconds left, and thanks to a foul on the attempt, Johnson converted the and-one free throw to make it 80-73.
For the second straight UCB possession, Hogan registered a steal, this time with 28 seconds left and the Eagles ran out the clock for the seven-point victory.
ERAU shot 48 percent from the floor, including 6-of-17 from long range, while shooting 22-for-36 at the charity stripe. Hogan finished with 21 points, six rebounds and four steals, while Johnson ended with a career-high 16 points and career-high eight rebounds. Majstorovic was the other Eagle in double-figures offensively with 13 points.
The Eagles will return to Florida, but will stay on the road for their next game on Dec. 30 at Nova Southeastern.
