FT. LAUDERDALE, Fla. - The Embry-Riddle men's basketball team found its' offensive groove on Friday night against Nova Southeastern as the Eagles put together two impressive halfs to down the Sharks on the road, 89-71. ERAU (8-4) got its first true road win of the season, while closing out the 2016 calendar year on a four-game winning streak. NSU (4-8) couldn't consistently stop the Eagles from scoring as all five ERAU starters reached double-figures offensively as the Blue and Gold shot 54 percent from the field and 12-of-20 from deep to the tune of 60 percent.
Head Coach
Steve Ridder, who notched his 664th career win, tying him with UCLA legend John Wooden, saw his team get out to a hot start in the first half, thanks to the shooting of
Dillon Graham from beyond the arc. Graham hit three triples in the first eight minutes as the Eagles built a 21-12 lead.
NSU was able to trim the lead down to five at 23-18, but the Eagles responded with a 15-4 run, capped by a
Brian Johnson dunk after a steal as ERAU took a 38-22 lead with under five minutes left in the half.
The Sharks battled back to within seven at the 2:12 mark, but a pair of free throws by
Dalton Barnes and another Johnson dunk gave the Eagles some momentum heading into the halftime break with a 44-33 lead.
Graham led all scorers with 14 points on 5-for-7 shooting, including four treys, while Barnes and Johnson were also in double-digits with 11 points and 10 points, respectively.
The Eagles and Sharks came out of the half playing evenly for the first six minutes, but with ERAU leading by 12 at the 14-minute mark, the Eagles got five quick points on a
Cole Hunter three and
Luka Majstorovic layup and despite NSU getting to within 11 with just under eight minutes left, the visitors were never really threatened as they went on to take a 20-point cushion on a Barnes jumper at the 2:43 mark en route to cruising to an 89-71 final score.
Graham and Barnes finished with 17 points each, as Barnes recorded a double-double with 10 assists.
Shaquan McArthur and Johnson each scored 13 points for the Blue and Gold, and Majstorovic ended the night with 12 points on five field goals and a pair of free throws.
Barnes' 17 points pushed him past Tom Fagley into 10th all-time on the Embry-Riddle scoring charts. The senior from Port Orange now has 1,581 career points as an Eagle.
