MELBOURNE, Fla. - In an instant classic, the Embry-Riddle men's basketball team saw a buzzer-beating three from Florida Tech fall through the net as the Panthers downed ERAU, 109-106 in the Clemente Center on Wednesday night. The Eagles (8-5) and Panthers (10-6) paired up for an explosion of offensive output, combining for 28 made threes and 215 points, but it was the last three-pointer from FIT that gave them the win in a wild finish.
Tied at 106-106, the Eagles had the ball with 34 seconds left, electing to try for the last shot, the Blue and Gold couldn't get a shot off against the FIT defense and was called for a shot clock violation, giving possession to the Panthers with 4.7 seconds left. FIT raced into the front court and got the ball into the hands of Sam Daniel who made his sixth trey of the night as the buzzer sounded to win it for the home team.
Daniel's three, which gave him 37 points for the game, was the 12th lead change in a game that featured two 30-point scorers for FIT, six players in double-figures for the Eagles, and a combined 60 percent shooting from the field for the two teams. Additionally, the Panthers were an incredible 28-for-28 from the free throw line, including 13-for-13 from Daniel.
The game was good from the tip as the teams came out hitting three after three in the first half.
Shaquan McArthur hit a triple at the 14:08 mark to give the Eagles a 16-12 lead, and the freshman came right back with another three on the next Eagle possession before
Dillon Graham got in on the fun with a three of his own for a 22-17 lead.
The Eagles built their first half lead to as many as a dozen on a free throw from Graham with just under nine minutes to play, but FIT answered with a 13-0 run to take a one-point lead before the Eagles stopped the bleeding with a
Dalton Barnes' jumper.
The teams went back-and-forth for the final six minutes of play and a
Skyler Hogan jumper with four seconds left in the half trimmed the FIT lead to one at 57-56, the score at the break. Hogan led the way for the Eagles with 17 points at the half, with
Luka Majstorovic adding 10 for ERAU.
The start of the second half featured eight ties in the first five minutes, but the Panthers started to pull away around the 14-minute mark, going up eight on a pair of Patrick Anderson free throws to make it 79-72.
FIT held the Eagles at arms-distance until the seven-minute mark when the visitors went on an 8-0 run to make it 91-90 FIT with just over five minutes to play.
Both teams traded the lead several times over the final few minutes as neither team led by more than one possession for the final six minutes.
After a Hogan jumper knotted the game at 104-104,
Brian Johnson came up with a steal and fastbreak dunk to give ERAU a two-point lead woth 90 seconds left. The Eagles got another defensive stop before Majstorovic was fouled on the other end of the floor. The freshman missed both free throws and FIT got two made free throws from Sam Daniel on the ensuing possession, setting up the final ERAU possession that ended in the shot clock violation.
Hogan finished with 29 points while Barnes had a double-double of 22 points and 10 assists. Majstorovic (14), McArthur (13), Johnson (13) and Graham (12) also reached double-figures for the Eagles.
ERAU will return home to take on Lynn on Saturday, Jan. 7 at 7 p.m. in the ICI Center.
