DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. - Embry-Riddle's freshman duo of
Shaquan McArthur and
Luka Majstorovic helped lead the Embry-Riddle men's basketball team to a thrilling, come-from-behind win over Lynn on Saturday night in the ICI Center, 75-71. McArthur and Majstorovic each registered a double-double as ERAU Head Coach
Steve Ridder won his 665th career game, moving him past UCLA legend John Wooden on the all-time men's college basketball wins list. ERAU (9-5) trailed by eight at halftime to the Fighting Knights (8-5), who entered the contest on a six-game winning streak, but a 43-31 second-half effort by the Blue and Gold, including the final four points of the game, pushed the hosts past Lynn for just the second time in program history.
After seeing Florida Tech score the final five points in Wednesday's 109-106 loss in Melbourne, the Eagles flipped the script on Saturday. With the game tied at 71-71 under a minute to go,
Dalton Barnes found Majstorovic with a great pass across the lane and the freshman big man tallied the final two of his 16 points on the night with an easy layup with 48 seconds left on the clock. The Eagles put forth one of their best defensive efforts of the night on the ensuing Lynn possession, forcing a tough jumper that was off target, and despite an offensive rebound by the Fighting Knights, Majstorovic recorded a big block on the follow-up shot, sending the ball out of bounds. A missed three by Lynn on the in-bounds was collected by Majstorovic and after three straight fouls by Lynn to get into the penalty, McArthur sealed the win with two free throws, pushing the lead to 75-71 with 23 seconds to go. Lynn's final attempt with three seconds left was no good and McArthur grabbed his career-best 14th rebound before running out the clock.
The exciting finish came after the two teams saw a massive swing in the middle of the second half as the Eagles, who clawed their way back from down 52-44 at the 15-minute mark, went on a 15-0 run, capped by a three-pointer from
Cole Hunter to give ERAU a 59-52 lead with just under nine minutes to play. After Lynn got to within two thanks to a quick 5-0 spurt, the Eagles responded with a McArthur jumper that stopped the momentum before a huge three from Barnes as ERAU went back up by seven with six and a half minutes left.
Trailing 69-61 at the 4:45 mark, Lynn went on an 8-0 run on the strength of two free throws from Vieux Kande and back-to-back treys from Marquan Botley and Juwan Frazier, tying the game at 69-69 with 2:17 to go. Barnes found Majstorovic for a jumper in the paint on the next Eagle possession as ERAU took the lead right back, but a Frazier driving layup with 1:03 left setup the thrilling final 60 seconds.
The first half saw the Eagles struggle offensively as ERAU shot just 34 percent from the floor and only 25 percent from long range in tying their lowest scoring half of the season at 32. The Eagles led by five, 15-10, after McArthur's first three of the night, but Lynn came back to tie it several times over the next few minutes before the Eagles once again went up four on a McArthur put-back dunk at the 5:22 mark of the first.
Leading 26-22, ERAU was outscored 18-6 over the final five minutes, capped by a Frazier three to account for the 40-32 Lynn lead at the break. McArthur and
Dillon Graham paced ERAU with nine points each in the opening frame.
McArthur, who previously set the a freshman scoring record with 25 in the season opener, finished with 22 points on 8-for-13 shooting and 14 rebounds for his first career double-double, while Majstorovic had 16 points on 8-for-13 shooting to go along with 10 boards, four assists, three steals and two blocks. Barnes was the only other Eagle in double-figures with 13 points, adding eight assists and seven rebounds. Barnes' 13 points moved him into a tie with Eric Lorenzi for eighth on the all-time ERAU scoring charts with 1,616 points.
The Eagles next play on Saturday, Jan. 14 in Miami Shores as they visit NCAA II No. 10 Barry for a 4 p.m. tip.
