MIAMI SHORES, Fla. – The Embry-Riddle women's volleyball team traveled down south for a Sunshine State Conference match against the Barry University Buccaneers. The Eagles got back to their winning ways and defeated the Bucs 3-1. ERAU improves to 11-8, 5-7 in SSC play, while Barry drops to 8-9, 4-8 in conference.
Theresa Jordan lead the way offensively, finishing the match with 20 kills, hit .385, along with 10 digs and three blocks.
Melanie Canfield had 14 kills and 10 blocks,
Paola Virella tallied 12 kills and eight digs,
Alyssa Rudd had 43 assists and eight digs,
Ella Duggan had six kills and three blocks, and
Olivia Roa had 21 digs and five assists.
Set number one did not start out well for the Eagles as Barry University jumped out to an early 9-1 lead. The Eagles got back into it with a 7-1 run to bring the Buccaneers lead to 10-8. Barry would be resilient and would push the lead to 20-13 forcing an Embry-Riddle timeout. The Bucs won their only set of the match, taking set one 25-19.
The second set was much more closely contested as there were eight ties and nine lead changes. With the score even at 14-14, the Eagles scored three straight points taking the lead 17-14. Barry would bring it within one multiple times but could not overcome the deficit as the closest the Bucs would get was 19-18. ERAU would finish the set on a 6-2 run thanks to kills by
Melanie Canfield,
Paola Virella and
Alyssa Rudd. The Eagles would win the second set 25-20.
The third set was evenly fought in the early going as the teams played to a 7-7 tie. The Eagles would seize the momentum going on a 7-1 run thanks to kills by
Theresa Jordan and
Ella Duggan along with a service ace by
Melanie Canfield. Trailing 14-8, Barry was forced to call a timeout. The Eagles would not allow the Bucs to make up any ground and would win the fourth set 25-19, securing a 3-1 victory. Embry-Riddle has now won seven of their last eight matches.
The Eagles will be back in action tomorrow when they travel to Ft. Lauderdale to take on Nova Southeastern. The Sharks defeated ERAU in the most recent match between the two schools in a five set thriller. The match is set to start at 4 p.m.
