DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. - The Embry-Riddle men's basketball team put their previous two shooting performances behind them and blitzed visiting Ave Maria to the tune of a 110-80 victory on Tuesday night in the ICI Center. The Eagles (3-2) shot 55 percent from the floor and connected on a dozen three-pointers while never trailing the Gyrenes (1-6) on Food Brings Hope Night.
ERAU had six players reach double-figures offensively, led by
Luka Majstorovic who tied a career-high with 20 points, while setting a career-best mark with nine field goals. Majstorovic was joined by
Nashad Mackey,
Joshua Hawkins,
Ognjen Miljkovic,
Cole Hunter and
Rudy Bibb-Boyd with at least 10 points, as Mackey and Hawkins, each with 19 points, posted personal ERAU-best marks.
The game was decided in the first half as the home team ran out to a 62-32 lead at the break, thanks in large part to forcing 11 AMU turnovers and turning those into 19 points. Miljkovic started the scoring with a tip-in and after Ave Maria briefly tied it, the Eagles went out to an 8-2 lead on a Mackey layup and never looked back. Miljkovic scored all 17 of his points in the opening period, shooting 7-for-9 from the field and 3-for-5 from deep. Hawkins, Majstorovic and Mackey all were in double-figures at the break.
With the Eagle bench getting the majority of playing time in the second period, the two teams each scored 48 points to account for the 110-80 final. The Eagles and Gyrenes combined for 24 triples, each team contributing 12 to the game total. Bibb-Boyd finished with a double-double of 10 points and a career-best 10 assists, while Mackey recorded his third double-double of the year with 19 points and 10 boards. As a team, the Eagles registered 34 assists on 46 field goals, the fourth-highest single-game total in program history. Every Eagle that played, scored and grabbed a rebound, including the first career points for
Scott Oakley.
The Eagles will host the Bahama House Shootout after Thanksgiving, welcoming Wingate (N.C.), West Alabama and Auburn Montgomery (Ala.) to the ICI Center. Wingate and West Alabama will square off at 5 p.m. on Friday, Nov. 24 before ERAU will take on AUM at 7 p.m. The consolation game is slated for 2 p.m. on Saturday, Nov. 25 before the title game at 4 p.m.
