GULF SHORES, Ala. – The Embry Riddle Eagles split for the second day at the Gulf Coast Invitational defeating the Delta State Statesman 3-1 and falling 8-0 to the Alabama-Hunstville Chargers. The Eagles record goes to 2-2, Delta State goes to 2-2 with Alabama-Huntsville moving to 3-1.
Ilona Andringa earned the win while
Kassidy Simons took the loss, both moving to 1-1 on the year.
Game 1 – ERAU 3, DSU 1
The Eagles scored first and held the lead for all seven innings.
Kendall Funk went 2-for-2 at the plate with two RBI and Andringa allowed only one run off of four hits, taking the win for a season record of 1-1.
In the first inning,
Maggie Scott singled and proceeded to steal second and third during Simons' at-bat. Simons and
Kailah Rain then walked to load the bases. Funk came to the plate and hit a deep single to score Scott and Simons giving the Eagles a 2-0 advantage.
DSU got on base after an infield error in the fourth inning and scored on the following double, cutting the Eagles lead to 2-1. In the bottom of the same inning,
Hannah Thomas reached first on a third strike wild pitch.
Jayla Jackson's sacrifice bunt advanced Thomas to second and base hit by
Eryn Chester brought Thomas home, building the Eagle's lead back up, 3-1.
The rest of the game yielded no runs for either team, giving ERAU a 3-1 victory over the Statesman.
Game 2 – UAH 8, ERAU 0
The Chargers took the lead in the first inning scoring one run. The Eagles remained unable to cut the deficit.
Infield errors proved to be the undoing of the Blue and Gold against Alabama-Huntsville, giving up three runs in the third inning.
Embry-Riddle's Simons landed on first base in the fourth but the Eagles remained unable to score. UAH came back and managed to score two more runs on Embry-Riddle errors to bring the score to 6-0.
The Chargers put runners on first and second early in the fifth inning but
Gabriella Obia made two unassisted tag outs to keep runners off of third until a UAH double scored two. This put the Chargers up 8-0 and was enough to end the game after five innings.
Simons and Scott each went 1-for-2 at the plate. Simons allowed only one walk.
The Eagles return to action Sunday for the final day of the tournament, taking on Mississippi College at 10a.m. and Mobile at 12:30 p.m.
