AUBURNDALE, Fla. – The Embry-Riddle softball team tied the program record for the longest game with a 15-inning win over Florida Southern on Friday. The game was knotted at one until the Eagles pushed in one run in the 15
th inning for a 2-1 victory. The Blue and Gold even their record at 11-11 while the Mocs drop to 12-9.
Florida Southern took the lead in the bottom of the second inning when ERAU gave up a bases-loaded walk.
Destiny Carroll led off the third inning with an infield single and was quickly advanced to second on
Eryn Chester's sacrifice bunt. After moving to third on
Anna Battison's grounder,
Kassidy Simons singled her in to score the tying run.
The Eagles put runners in scoring position to lead off the sixth inning, but the FSC defense ended the inning before the Blue and Gold could score the tiebreaking run.
The game was forced into extra innings as it was still tied after the seventh inning.
Neither side could bring in the winning run and the teams battled through eight extra innings.
Trouble loomed for the Eagles in the bottom of the 12
th when the Mocs put runners on second and third with nobody out, but ERAU found a quick three outs to prevent any runs.
It wasn't until the 15
th inning that the tie was broken when
Hannah Thomas came home on Chester's single giving the Eagles a 2-1 lead. Simons recorded the final three outs to secure the victory.
Simons (4-6) earned the win for the Eagles blanking the Mocs over the final six innings, allowing just three hits and striking out three.
Ilona Andringa started in the circle and gave up one run on eight hits and struck out nine in nine innings of work. Chester went 2-for-6 at the plate with the game-winning RBI. Simons finished 3-for-7 and knocked in one.
The Eagles return to action tomorrow to face the Mocs in a doubleheader beginning at 1 p.m. in Auburndale.
