DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. - Heading into the ninth inning on Friday it appeared the Embry-Riddle baseball team was well on its way to winning its fifth straight, which would have been the longest such streak in two seasons for the Blue and Gold; however, four walks and four hits by Barry in the top of the final inning led to seven runs as the Bucs mounted a big comeback for the second straight season over the Eagles, winning 8-5.
ERAU (9-11) got a great start from
Matthew Russell in his Friday night debut, as he went six shutout innings, holding Barry (10-11) to just three hits with four strikeouts. The hosts also got some clutch two-out hits from
Zach Howard,
Luis Olivier and
Kyle Guttveg prior to the ninth as they took a 5-1 lead into the last frame, but the Eagle bullpen couldn't hold the lead as ERAU blew its fourth lead in the seventh inning or later in 2017.
Russell and his counterpart Jonathan Hernandez traded scoreless innings through the first three frames, and the Eagles were finally able to give Russell a lead in the fourth when Howard tripled to deep left center off of Hernandez with two outs, scoring Olivier all the way from first for a 1-0 lead.
The Eagle defense got out of a jam in the fifth with runners on the corners, blowing up a first and third play and picking off the lead runner at third to end the frame and the threat.
Olivier brought in two more Eagle runs in the bottom of the fifth with a two-out double down the left field line, scoring
Jonathan Camp and
A.J. Mazzurco as Embry-Riddle went up 3-0.
Russell shrugged off a leadoff double in the sixth, leaving the runner at third with a pair of fly outs and was relieved by
Vincent Rosace to start the seventh. Barry walked twice and collected a single to load the bases with out one, but following a sacrifice fly to score the first Buc run of the night, Rosace ended the inning by striking out Justin Lamazares.
ERAU added two insurance runs in the last of the eighth as
Cody Bogart and Guttveg each hit RBI singles, scoring
Christopher Medina and
Jordan Hicks, respectively, for a 5-1 lead heading into the ninth.
Troy Naab got one out in-between walking the bases full before
Luke Helms was called upon to try to nail down the save. What followed was a two-RBI single from Lamazares and another walk to again load the bases with one out.
Quinn Bourque also failed to get an out, allowing back-to-back doubles, including the go-ahead two-bagger to Claudio Rubiera as Barry took its first lead of the night, 7-5.
Jason Dodson relieved Bourque and was able to get out of the inning following a squeeze bunt that made it 8-5.
ERAU got two men on in the ninth, but Daniel Broeseker ended the game by inducing a ground ball from
Robbie Hanlon as he earned his third save of the season.
Helms (0-1) got the loss for the Blue and Gold while Guttveg and Medina each collected two hits.
ERAU and Barry play a doubleheader at Sliwa Stadium on Saturday starting at 1 p.m.
