DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. - For the first time since 2006, the Embry-Riddle Eagles suffered a three-game sweep at home as Barry mounted another late comeback in Saturday's opener before exploding for 15 runs in the series finale to complete the sweep of the Eagles, 10-8 and 15-4. The Eagles (9-13) allowed 27 runs in the 7th, 8th and 9th innings in the series as Barry (12-11) improved to 6-2 all-time against the Blue and Gold.
The Eagles will host West Florida on Tuesday and Wednesday next week at Sliwa Stadium with game times set for 7 p.m. and 3 p.m., respectively.
Game 1 - BU 10, ERAU 8
After a heartbreaking loss in Friday's series opener, the Eagles saw yet another late lead slip away as the visitors scored seven runs in the eighth and ninth to secure the series win over Embry-Riddle.
The Eagles actually mounted the first comeback, entering the sixth down 3-0 after Barry got to
Austin Lee for three early runs.
Jordan Brown started the sixth off with a walk, followed by a
Jonathan Camp single and a fly out that put runners on the corners with one out. After
Luis Olivier walked to load the bases,
Christopher Medina drew a bases-loaded walk to get the Eagles on the board, followed by a RBI walk from
Zach Howard and a
Cody Bogart single to tie the game at 3-3.
Kyle Guttveg gave the Eagles a lead with another bases-loaded walk as ERAU took a 4-3 advantage.
Lee tossed a scoreless seventh, but saw the lead disappear in the eighth and was replaced by
Luke Helms who was unable to get an out as the visitors struck for five total runs in the inning to take an 8-4 lead.
The Eagles got right back into it with three runs in their half of the frame, two on a
Robbie Hanlon triple before Guttveg brought him in with a sac fly, making it 8-7 Barry. However, the Bucs answered right back with two insurance runs in the ninth and they proved to be huge as Olivier homered for the third time in the week in the home ninth, but that's all the Eagles could muster as they fell, 10-8.
Guttveg and Hanlon each had two RBIs while Camp collected three hits to lead the way for the Eagles.
Game 2 - BU 15, ERAU 4
The series finale all hinged on a 12-run seventh in which Barry took a tie game and turned it into a blowout as 17 batters came to the plate and 12 hits and two errors led to a dozen runs.
Howard gave the Eagles a lead in the second with a double, scoring
Justin Franklin, but the lead was short-lived as Barry answered right back against Eagle starter
Kenny Burkhead in the third.
BU took the lead with a single run in the fourth before ERAU tied it on an Olivier sac fly to score Camp in the home-half of the fourth inning. Each team added a run in the sixth before the wheels fell off for the home team in the seventh as four pitchers threw in the frame before three outs were recorded.
ERAU accounted for the final run in the ninth on a
Cole Habig sac fly to score
Gunnar Bradshaw, making it 15-4.
Camp and Habig were the only Eagle batters to register multiple hits.
