DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. - It was death by a thousand cuts on Tuesday for the Embry-Riddle baseball team as West Florida scored at least one run in seven of nine innings to send the Eagles to their fourth straight loss, 9-5. The Eagles (9-14) took a 4-1 lead in the second, but the Argos (12-10) were able to get their first-ever win against ERAU by outscoring the home team 8-1 over the final seven frames.
Chase Kiefer singled up the middle against
Troy Naab to start the game, and he would be the first of seven leadoff batters to reach and score in the game as he touched home on a single from Justin Ambrosino for a 1-0 UWF lead.
The Eagles went quietly in their half of the first, but the bottom of the second was all Eagles.
Luis Olivier singled, followed by a run-scoring double from
Zach Howard before a
Cody Bogart walk and
Robbie Hanlon single to load the bases with no outs.
Cole Habig cleared the bags with a double down the left field line, making it 4-1 Embry-Riddle.
A two-run homer in the third trimmed the Eagle lead to 4-3, and the Argos went ahead in the fourth with a pair of runs, taking a 5-4 lead that they would not surrender.
West Florida added single runs in the fifth, seventh, eighth and ninth, while the only answer ERAU had was a run in the seventh when
Jonathan Camp doubled in
Kyle Guttveg.
Guttveg went 3-for-5 for the Eagles, while Olivier was the only other Eagle with multiple hits with two. Naab (1-4) got the loss for the Blue and Gold in six innings of work.
Kyle Lugar,
Vincent Rosace and
Matthew Russell all saw action out of the bullpen.
The Eagles and Argos wrap up their short, two-game series with a 3 p.m. game tomorrow, Wednesday, March 15.
