DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. – The Embry-Riddle softball team battled the Penmen of Southern New Hampshire to a doubleheader split on Monday. The Eagles finished game one with a walk-off double in the bottom of the seventh inning to win 2-1. SNHU came back to win the second game, 3-2 in eight innings. Embry-Riddle's record remains even at 13-13 while SNHU is 8-4 on the season.
GAME 1 – ERAU 2, SNHU 1
The Blue and Gold gained the lead in the second inning after
Gabriella Obia reached first on a fielder's choice, advanced to second on
Jayla Jackson's single and was singled in by
Hannah Thomas.
The Eagles held their 1-0 lead through the sixth inning but in the top of the seventh, the Penmen doubled in one run of their own to tie the game 1-1.
With two runners on in the bottom of the seventh,
Kassidy Simons came to the plate and hammered a double that brought in
Eryn Chester for the game-winning run.
Ilona Andringa (8-6) earned the win for the Eagles giving up one run on six hits and striking out four.
Jayla Jackson hit a double and finished 2-for-3, while Simons got hit by the pitch twice and finished 1-for-2 with the walk-off double.
GAME 2 – ERAU 2, SNHU 1
The Eagles were the first to score a run in the first inning, after Chester reached on an error, was advanced by Battison's sacrifice bunt, and singled in by Simons to give the Eagles a 1-0 advantage.
In the third inning,
Maggie Scott's triple drove in Chester to improve the ERAU lead to two.
The Penmen rallied in the sixth inning and pushed through two runs, the first on an error and the second on a double. Knotted at two, the game was forced into extra innings, but ended after the eighth when ERAU gave up a home run and were unable to answer back in the bottom of the inning, with the Penmen coming out on top 3-2.
Simons (5-7) took the loss giving up three runs on seven hits with seven strikeouts. She went 1-for-3 at the plate with one RBI. Scott finished the game 1-for-4 and had an RBI triple.
The Eagles will be back tomorrow as they take on American International at home in a doubleheader beginning at 4 p.m.
