WEST PALM BEACH, Fla. – The Embry-Riddle softball team swept a doubleheader at Keiser with a pair of shutouts on Wednesday. The final score of game was 3-0 while game two ended 6-0. The Eagles improve to 18-15 on the season while the Seahawks become 10-13.
GAME ONE – ERAU 3, KU 0
The Eagles struck first when
Maggie Scott scored the opening run for the Eagles. She singled and stole second to put herself in scoring position and two batters later was brought in on
Kassidy Simons' sacrifice fly.
The Eagles held a 1-0 lead until the fourth inning when they increased the gap with two additional runs. Simons singled to lead off the inning.
Natalie Morales pinch ran for Simons and advanced to second when
Anna Battison singled through the right side. With no outs, Funk attempted a sacrifice bunt but a Keiser error allowed her to land safely on first and enabled Battison and Morales to each take an extra base, bringing in Morales to put the Blue and Gold up 2-0. After a double play,
Jayla Jackson singled in Battison, giving the Eagles a 3-0 lead.
The Seahawks threatened to cut the ERAU lead in the sixth inning when they put runners on the corners, but with two outs, a routine fly ball ended the inning scoreless for Keiser.
The game ended in a 3-0 victory for the Blue and Gold.
Ilona Andringa (11-8) earned the win for Embry-Riddle tossing her fifth shutout allowing six hits with 10 strikeouts.
Maggie Scott finished 3-for-4 with two triples and a run scored.
GAME ONE – ERAU 6, KU 0
The Eagles were first to get on the board in the second inning when
Kendall Funk executed a squeeze play to bring in Battison for the first run.
Kailah Rain scored on
Gabriella Obia's RBI groundout to put the Eagles up 2-0.
In the third inning, Scott's double and Chester's bunt single put runners on the corners and Chester stole second to put both runners in scoring position. Simons knocked in Scott with a single to right field to extend the Eagles lead to 3-0. The Eagles lead grew to 4-0 on another squeeze play with a bunt by Battison driving in Chester. Rain doubled in Simons putting the Eagles up 5-0. A pair of fly balls to right field ended the inning for the Eagles but the damage was done.
ERAU added one run in the fifth inning, when Simons singled, went to second on Battison's walk and to third on Rain's groundout. Funk batted in Simons with an infield single.
The Seahawks were only able to muster three baserunners and it was not enough to put them on the board, ending game two in a 6-0 shutout.
Simons (7-7) earned the win with her third shutout and allowed only three hits. She tied the program record with 15 strikeouts. Simons, Chester and Rain all finished 2-for-4 at the plate. Chester scored one run, Rain scored once and had an RBI while Simons also had an RBI and scored two runs.
The Eagles return to action this weekend in Daytona Beach with a three-game series against Palm Beach Atlantic beginning with a single game on Friday at 6 p.m.
