DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. – The Embry-Riddle softball team took two games of a doubleheader from Eckerd to secure the series win on Friday. Both teams held the lead in game one but it ultimately ended in a 7-3 win for the Eagles. The Blue and Gold controlled the board in game two and ended the game in a six run shutout. Embry-Riddle improves their record to 25-22 while Eckerd drops to 19-32.
GAME ONE – ERAU 7, EC 3
The Tritons were first to get on the board with one run in the second inning after an Eagle error allowed the runner to come home.
The Eagles didn't stay down long and scored two to take the lead in the bottom of the third inning.
Anna Battison reached first on a fielder's choice, stole second and advanced to third on an Eckerd throwing error. She then came home on the same error that allowed
Kailah Rain to take first and second, knotting the game 1-1.
Maggie Scott singled to right field to bring in Rain with the tie-breaking run.
In the fourth inning, the Eagles added to their 2-1 lead when
Destiny Carroll's groundout pushed through
Kendall Funk, putting the Eagles up 3-1.
In the fifth inning, the Tritons came back to tie the game at three with a double to deep center field that scored two.
The Eagles broke out of the stalemate in the sixth inning with four runs to put them up 7-3. Carroll singled for the first run of the inning, then
Eryn Chester singled to left center and brought in one run. Battison rocketed a double down the right field line, allowing two additional Eagles to come home and secure the lead.
One more hit for the Tritons came in the seventh inning but it wasn't enough to challenge the Blue and Gold and the game ended in a hard-fought 7-3 Eagle victory.
Kassidy Simons (10-10) earned her 10th win of the season pitching the final two innings, giving up no runs on two hits with three strikeouts.
Ilona Andringa (14-11) started the game going five innings and giving up three runs on six hits with four strikeouts. Chester finished 2-for-3 at the plate with one run and one RBI while Battison finished 1-for-4 with a double, a run and 2 RBI's.
GAME TWO – ERAU 2, EC 0
It wasn't until the third inning of game two that the Eagles got things going. With two outs, Chester singled, followed by Battison who did the same to bring Rain to the plate. She reached base on a throwing error that brought Chester home for a 1-0 lead.
The Eagles increased their lead by two in the fifth inning when Rain walked with the bases loaded forcing in one run and Scott hit a sacrifice fly to bring the score to 3-0 in favor of Embry-Riddle.
In the sixth inning the Eagles doubled their lead when
Jayla Jackson scored from first on an Eckerd throwing error. That same error landed
Hannah Thomas on third and she was able to score when Carroll hammered a triple. Up 5-0, Chester singled in Carroll to put the score at 6-0.
The Tritons were unable to get anything started and the Blue and Gold ended the game in a 6-0 shutout.
Simons (11-10) pitched a complete game shutout giving up no runs on only four hits with two strikeouts. Chester finished with a perfect 3-for-3 at the plate with two runs and one RBI. Carroll went 2-for-3 with two runs and one RBI. Scott and Rain also had one RBI apiece.
The Eagles return to action tomorrow at 10 a.m. to take on the Tritons in their final game of the season.
