Balanced Attack Leads @ERAUMBasketball to Daytona Mitsubishi/Kia Shootout Title Game

DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. - The Embry-Riddle men's basketball team moved to 2-0 at home in 2018-19 with an 87-59 win over Puerto Rico-Mayaguez in both team's Daytona Mitsubishi/Kia Shootout opener on Friday night. The Eagles (6-2) held the Tarzans (0-4) to just 31 percent from the floor and once-again dominated the glass (52-36) while four players reached double-figures en route to a title game matchup against Davenport (Mich.) on Saturday night.

ERAU shrugged off a slow start and a 38 percent effort from the floor in the opening half, taking a 38-25 lead into the break, breaking things open in the second by shooting nearly 50 percent from the field. The Eagles got 36 points off their bench and owned a 21-4 difference in second-chance points against UPRM.

Luka Majstorovic and Tylin Lockett-Fuller made the first two buckets of the game, but the Tarzans answered back with a 6-0 run to take their only lead of the night before Alston Jones and Chris Murray made back-to-back layups to regain the advantage for the home team.

ERAU went up 13-8 on Lockett-Fuller's trey at the 12:49 mark, and a few minutes later it was Elijah Jenkins who hit from deep to push the lead to eight, 20-12. The Eagles led by double-digits for the rest of the first half, pushing the lead to 33-19 on five straight free throws from Nick Heard with under four to play in the first period. Wyatt Hollmann accounted for the final three points of the half with a fade away jumper in the paint and a free throw for a 38-25 lead.

The Blue and Gold quickly put things out of reach of the visitors within the first five minutes of the second half, going up 21 (48-27) on another Lockett-Fuller triple. Heard connected on a three at the 7:53 mark for a 23-point cushion (70-47) and the bench took over the rest of the way for the Eagles with the lead growing to as many as 31 on a Scott Oakley layup before a Tarzan three accounted for the 87-59 final.

Embry-Riddle shot 44 percent (30-for-69) from the field, including an 8-for-22 effort from deep, while turning the Tarzans over 21 times, leading to 21 points for the Eagles. Murray notched a career-high with 15 rebounds to go along with eight points and two blocks, while Lockett-Fuller went for a career-high 14 points to lead all scorers. Jones finished with 13 points, three boards, three assists and two steals, while Majstorovic had 10 points and seven rebounds and Heard came off the bench for a career-best 13 points. The Eagles rejected a season-high eight shots, with Murray, Majstorovic and Joshua Hawkins each blocking a pair.

Davenport (5-0) took care of Lees-McRae in the tournament opener, 107-81, and the Panthers and Eagles will matchup in the title game for the second time in tournament history. DU won the previous meeting, 81-74 on Nov. 10, 2012. Lees-McRae will take on UPR-Mayaguez at 4 p.m. on Saturday, followed by the Eagles and Panthers at 6 p.m.
