NEWBERRY, S.C. – The Embry-Riddle women's lacrosse team put on its third straight dominant performance, easily defeating the Newberry Wolves on Sunday by a score of 23-5. The Eagles are now 3-0 in their inaugural season, while the Wolves drop to 1-1.
ERAU was superior in nearly every statistical category, outshooting the Wolves 43-12, including a 37-8 advantage in shots on goal, as well as winning the draw control battle 22-8, picking up more ground balls (36-28), and causing more turnovers (9-4).
Mya Watson led the way with six goals and an assist, while
Gillian Greenberg and
McKenzie Jackson each tallied five goals. Greenberg added an assist and four ground balls, while Jackson was the match leader in assists (3), ground balls (13), and draw controls (14).
Meg Jourden and
Erin Bryenton also chipped in three goals and an assist apiece. Mary Kreider improved to 3-0 in goal, registering three saves in the game.
The Blue and Gold got on the board first with a Greenberg goal just over five minutes into the game, and that sparked a quick 4-0 spurt in the span of 3:47. After the Wolves got on the board just under 10 minutes into the contest, the Eagles answered back with another 4-0 run to expand the lead to 8-1 with 8:33 left in the first half. Each side tallied three more goals in the half, giving ERAU an 11-4 cushion heading to the locker room.
Embry-Riddle put on an even more impressive performance in the second half, outscoring Newberry 12-1. In the first 13 minutes of the period, ERAU racked up seven goals without surrendering any. The Blue and Gold finished the game by holding the Wolves scoreless over the final 11:40, with ERAU scoring five times during that time frame.
The Eagles continue their inaugural season when they return home to host Davenport on Feb. 28 at 7 p.m.
