DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. - The Embry-Riddle baseball team got the opportunity to step out of regular season play on Tuesday night as they took on the Class-A Daytona Tortugas at Historic Jackie Robinson Ballpark. Eagle center fielder Kyle Guttveg shined in the 9-0 loss to the Cincinnati Reds affiliate, going 2-for-2 while reaching base in all three plate appearances and making several nice defensive plays,
In the first, the Eagles threatened early after a five-pitch walk issued to Jake Malone and a single from Kyle Guttveg put runners on the corners. After a pop up, Boston College product Jesse Adams struck out back-to-back Eagles to keep the game scoreless.
Former big leaguer Dilson Herrera hit a two-run homer in the bottom of the first, but Kyle Marsh, who got the start on the mound for the Blue and Gold, was able to minimize the damage with a pick off and two straight strikeouts to send the Eagles back to the dugout.
Cody Crouse got out of a jam in the second thanks to some slick fielding by Malone and Alex Dodd as the game moved to the third still at 2-0 Tortugas.
Guttveg continued to see the ball well with a two-out triple to the wall in left center in the third, directly below the new video board, but the Eagles couldn't bring him in and the Tortugas doubled their lead in the bottom of the frame as they took a 4-0 lead into the fourth.
Daytona added three runs in the fourth to push the lead to 7-0 before the Eagles went quietly in the fifth and the hosts chipped on another run in to make it 8-0 heading into the sixth inning.
The Blue and Gold got a leadoff single from Malone followed by a walk from Guttveg to start the sixth, but the Eagles again couldn't cross home before Dominic Jeancola took over in the home-half of the inning, allowing one run in the Tortugas' final at-bat.
ERAU returns to its regular season schedule with a weekend series against No. 3 Tampa, beginning with a single game on Friday at Sliwa Stadium and a doubleheader on Saturday at the Eagles' home park.
