BOCA RATON, Fla. – The Embry-Riddle women's soccer dominated the offensive in a Sunshine State Conference match-up against Lynn, but the Eagles (7-3-1, 5-1-1) were only able to come away with a draw, tying the Fighting Knights (4-7-3, 1-4-3) 1-1 on the road on Saturday.
"I'm proud of our players as I thought we executed our game plan really well and dominated for the entire game," ERAU Head Coach
Samantha Bohon said. "I'm sad for our players as they definitely deserved the points tonight, but soccer can be a cruel game. We put plenty of chances on frame, had five one-v-one chances with their goalkeeper and each time she made incredible saves. So, she deserves a ton of credit for keeping her team in the game. We battled hard and left everything on the field, so now we move forward and recover for a big week."
After a scoreless first 45 minutes that saw the Blue and Gold with a couple of great chances by
Ragnheidur Gardarsdottir and
Rita Okoro, both teams scored a goal apiece in the second period.
While the Eagles' offensive players created some dangerous chances in the first half, it was a defender who put the Eagles on the board in the second. Just over three minutes into the half, the Eagles earned their second corner kick of the night.
Marie Myhrvold Seim took the set piece and her delivery fell inside the six-yard box and bounced off a Lynn defender into the path of
Sophie Brundin who tapped in her third goal of the year to put the Blue and Gold up 1-0.
In the 57
thminute, Okoro maneuvered her way into one-v-one opportunity against Lynn goalkeeper Devan Malcolm, but her shot was saved by Malcolm who immediately put the ball back in play. Lynn quickly got the ball up the field and executed a successful counterattack as Annlina Sankoh finished and Ida Langer pass to tie the score at 1-1.
The goal gave the Fighting Knights a momentary boost as they tested the ERAU defense again with a shot the sailed just wide of the goal, but the Eagles reestablished themselves on the offensive end of the pitch, recording six of the next seven shots in the game. The final 15 minutes of regulation saw the Eagle defense allow just one shot by the home team. On the other end of the field, ERAU had several chances, including strikes by Gardarsdottir and
Savanna Sheahan that forced Malcolm to come up with big saves, and a pair of close-range touches that required saves off the line by the Lynn defense. But they were unable to come up with another goal, sending the game into overtime.
The Eagles held a 3-2 edge in shots in the two overtime periods and finished the game with a 24-13 advantage in that category. ERAU had nine shots on target, while Lynn only had four, and the Eagles bested the Fighting Knights 9-3 in corner kicks.
The Eagles return to Daytona Beach for a two-game homestand next week beginning with a 7 p.m. match against Florida Southern on Wednesday.
