DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. – The Embry-Riddle women's lacrosse team (2-0) notched its second win of the season with a 22-1 victory over Ave Maria (0-1) in the Eagles' home opener, Thursday at the Embry-Riddle Lacrosse Stadium.
Thursday's game saw nine Eagles find the back of the net led by
McKenzie Jackson and
Mya Watson who netted five goals apiece, and
Kendall Leonard who recorded the third hat trick of her career. Jackson also won eight ground balls and nine draws, both game highs, and dished two assists. The Eagles had assists on 14 of their 22 scores, led by
Elizabeth Ninesling who had four assists to go with two goals and five ground balls.
The Blue and Gold scored early and often tallying four goals in the first six minutes of play. Watson opened the scoring with an unassisted goal just 54 seconds into the game and Jackson made it 2-0 at the 28:01 mark after winning the ensuing draw control.
The score was 6-0 in favor of the Eagles when Katelyn Sherman found the back of the net for the Gyrenes at the 19:23 mark, but ERAU responded by scoring eight unanswered to close out the first half with a 14-1 lead.
In the second half, the Eagles outshot the Gyrenes 17-4 and scored on eight of those chances to seal the win.
The Eagle dominated possession thanks in part to a 17-6 advantage in the draw circle and by forcing 14 Ave Maria turnovers.
Emily Suh led the way with four caused turnovers.
Mary Catherine Kreider collected three saves in her first start of the season in the cage.
The Eagles are back on the road on Sunday, traveling to South Carolina for a 1 p.m. game against Limestone.
