DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. - The Embry-Riddle baseball pitching staff held the 2018 NCAA II World Series runner-up Columbus State Cougars to just three hits over two games on Friday, but could only come away with one win. The Eagles (1-4) dropped the opener 2-0 to the Cougars (2-3), stranding 10 runners in the process before
Troy Naab and
Samuel Brunnig combined to one-hit CSU in the nightcap, 3-0.
The two teams will meet up tomorrow for the series finale. Game time is set for 11 a.m.
Game 1 - CSU 2, ERAU 0
Payton Rice matched zeroes for much of the day's opener with preseason All-American lefty Kolton Ingram, but CSU took advantage of a leadoff hit-by-pitch in the fifth to take a 1-0 lead before adding a second run in the eighth.
Rice (0-2) held the Cougars to just one hit, unfortunately it proved to be the difference in the game as Kendall Ford collected an infield single in the fifth, driving in the runner from third for a 1-0 lead that the Eagles could never overcome.
ERAU struck out 10 times against Ingram, but still had a chance in the bottom of the ninth. CSU had added a solo homer in the eighth to go up 2-0, but the Eagles loaded the bases with one out for
Kyle Guttveg. Guttveg's liner towards third was caught by the CSU third baseman was was able to race back to the bag and double-off
Kirk Sidwell to end the game.
Guttveg went 3-for-5 for the Eagles, who out-hit the Cougars 7-2.
Game 2 - ERAU 3, CSU 0
Naab (1-0) was the story of the day's final game, giving up a leadoff double to Ford to start the game before retiring 18 of the next 21 batters he faced, and not allowing a base hit.
Naab struck out seven Cougars in six frames and faced the minimum in four of the six innings he pitched.
The Eagles gave Naab an early lead when
Kyle Marsh singled home Guttveg in the first.
Luis Olivier doubled the lead with a triple to right, bringing in
Mike Lawson for a 2-0 lead.
Only one other Cougar got into scoring position after Ford was stranded at third to end the first inning, and Naab was able to get out of the jam in the sixth by getting a foul out off the bat of Dane Bullock.
The Eagles went up 3-0 when Guttveg collected a sac fly in the fifth.
After issuing a leadoff walk in the seventh, Naab was relieved by Brunnig and the Eagle sophomore nailed down the first save of his career by retiring all three CSU batters he faced.
It was the 18th one-hitter in program history and the first since Corey Tufts and Clayton Wagner one-hit USCB on Feb. 15, 2014.
