WILSON, N.C. – The Embry-Riddle men's lacrosse team rebounded after a slow start on Tuesday to put on a dominant second-half performance en route to a 23-9 thrashing of Barton. The 23 goals were a program record for a single game, as was
Connor Bullock's five-goal performance. The Blue and Gold improved to 8-2 on the season with the win, making ERAU the first team in the country to earn its eighth win, while the Bulldogs dropped to 1-8.
For the Eagles, it was the first time in program history they topped the 20-goal mark in a game, and it was also the first time Embry-Riddle held its opponent scoreless for an entire half.
Bullock led all players with five goals and an assist, while
Kyle Dalrymple added four goals and
Jacob Schripsema chipped in three goals and an assist.
Coleman Jacobs tallied two goals and three assists and
Jared Kane scored a pair of goals along with an assist. In total, 12 different Eagles found the back of the net, which is also a program record.
Mark Urso was 22-of-31 in faceoffs and collected a game-high 17 ground balls and
Lucas Fraser made seven saves in goal.
It took the Eagle offense some time to get going, with Dalrymple posting the first goal of the game for ERAU more than 10 minutes into the contest after Barton scored the first four goals of the game. Bullock and Schripsema followed Dalrymple with goals of their own to cut the deficit to 4-3, but the Bulldogs got two goals back in the final two minutes of the quarter to pull ahead, 6-3.
After BC extended its lead to 7-3 early in the second,
Mitchell Cody and Jacobs scored consecutive goals to make it 7-5. Another Bulldog goal was followed by three straight Eagle tallies, scored by Bullock,
Gavriel Del Villar, and Dalrymple, which tied the game up at 8-8. Barton broke the tie with a goal with 33 seconds left in the half, giving the home side a 9-8 lead at the break.
The Eagles dominated the third and fourth quarters, beginning with back-to-back Dalrymple goals to put the Blue and Gold ahead for the first time in the game, 10-9. Bullock and Kane scored within 30 seconds of each other to make it 12-9, and the scoring didn't stop there, with four more Eagle goals coming in the final seven minutes of the quarter, building the lead to 16-9.
Kane and Jacobs scored in the first five minutes of the fourth to make it 18-9, and neither side tallied any more goals for over five minutes. The ERAU offense sparked to life again late, notching five more goals in the final 4:58 to give the Eagles a dominant 23-9 win.
The Eagles return home on Saturday, March 16 to host Palm Beach Atlantic in the SSC opener for both teams. The game is scheduled for a 4 p.m. start.
