Women’s Tennis Edged by Navy 4-3

DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. – Wednesday afternoon's women's tennis match between Embry-Riddle (3-4) and the U.S. Naval Academy (15-6) was a hard-fought, three-hour and 21-minute battle. In the end, it was the Midshipmen who were able to pull out the win, edging the Eagles 4-3 at the Crotty Tennis Complex.

The day started with a Navy win at No. 3 doubles as Amanda Cyr and Meghana Komarraju notched a 6-2 win over Roberta Krvajica and Mafalda Soares. Georgina Wood and Alexis Marshall got the point back for ERAU as they teamed up to take down Danika Kahatapitiya and Tina Li 6-3 at the second doubles position.

At No. 1 doubles, the ERAU tandem of Itxaso Blanco and Jillian Hobbs got off to strong start, taking a 3-0 lead against Annalise Klopfer and Aimee Dervishian. The Navy pair won the next two games and after both teams held serve over the next six games, resulting in a 6-5 ERAU lead,Blanco and Hobbs broke Klopfer and Dervishian to win the match 7-5 and clinch the doubles point for the Blue and Gold.

In singles, Katreina Corpuz tied the team score with a 6-2, 6-0 win over Wood on court three, and Brooke Bogdanovich made it 2-1 Navy by topping Soares 6-1, 6-2 at the sixth position. Blanco then leveled the score by besting Ansofi Wreder 6-2, 6-4 at the top spot, but Kaylah Hodge was able to reclaim the lead for the Midshipmen by holding off Krvajica 6-2, 7-5 at No. 2.

Playing at No. 4 singles, Sabrina Ehrenfort evened the score at 3-3, leaving it up to the fifth flight singles match between Marshall and Kacey Moore to decide the match.

Moore got a fairly easy 6-2 win in the first set, but Marshall fought back to win the second 7-5 and force a decisive third set. Neither player was able to hold serve at the start of the set as the first six games were all breaks. With the match tied at 3-3, Moore registered the first hold of the set and was able to hold serve the rest of the way to clinch the match for Navy with a 6-4 third-set win.

The Eagles are back in action tomorrow when they travel to Sanlando Park in Orlando for a neutral site match against Augustana at 4 p.m.
