ORLANDO, Fla. – For the second straight day, the Embry-Riddle women's tennis team was involved in a thee-hour battle and on Wednesday, the Eagles emerged with a victory, topping Augustana 5-2 at the USTA National Campus. ERAU handed the Vikings (13-1) their first loss of the season and evened the Eagles' record at 4-4.
It took just 22 minutes for
Georgina Wood and
Alexis Marshall to score the first point of the day as they teamed up for a 6-0 defeat of Taylor Jackson and Anca Rusu at No. 2 doubles. The match at the top spot went to Komelia Staniszewska and Laura Arce Vieyra who bested ERAU's
Jillian Hobbs and
Itxaso Blanco to tie the team score at 1-1.
The deciding match on court three lasted 56 minutes. Trailing 6-5,
Roberta Krvajica and
Mafalda Soares broke Crace Goble and Annika Teske to tie things up a 6-6. The ERAU duo owned the ensuing tiebreaker dispatching Goble and Teske 7-1 to secure the doubles point and give the Eagles a 1-0 advantage heading into singles.
Marshall extended the Eagle lead to 2-0 with a 6-1, 6-2 defeat of Rusu at the fifth singles position, but the Vikings got a point back after Arce Vieyra bested Krvajica 6-0, 6-3 on court two. Next off the court was Ehrenfort who downed Goble 6-2, 6-2, and Soares clinched the Eagle victory with her 6-4, 6-3 win over Teske at No. 6.
The last two matches off the court both went to three sets. The Eagles won the first three-setter as Wood toppled Jackson 6-2, 4-6, 10-7 on court four, but the Vikings were able to close out the match with a win at the top spot as Staniszewska held off Blanco 7-6 (2), 4-6, 13-11.
The Blue and Gold will have an eight-day break before returning to Sunshine State Conference play on March 21.
