LAKELAND, Fla. - The Embry-Riddle baseball team couldn't quite complete its third straight Sunshine State Conference sweep on Sunday, dropping the finale at Florida Southern, 8-3. The Eagles (19-11, 8-4 SSC) still won the series thanks to taking the first two games against the Mocs (18-13, 4-8) on Friday and Saturday.
11 men left on the bases doomed the Eagles on getaway day, as the visitors managed to out-hit FSC, 11-9, but Florida Southern got big days from the leadoff man Victor Brown as he homered twice to lead the Mocs to the win.
ERAU scored first when
Kyle Marsh singled home
Kyle Guttveg in the top of the first inning, but the Mocs answered with the first of Brown's two long balls in the bottom of the inning and FSC took the lead later on in the frame on a two-run double against ERAU starter
Payton Rice.
The Eagles were quiet against Trevor Castell from the second through the fifth, and FSC added a run in the fourth to extend the lead to 4-1.
Cole Habig drove in the second Eagle run of the day with a two-out triple in the sixth, scoring
Kirk Sidwell from second, but the hosts put the game away with Brown's three-run shot in the last of the inning.
Both teams added a run in the eighth, the Eagles, on a pinch-hit RBI single from
Josh Reynolds to plate
Zach Howard, and the Mocs, on a solo homer, to account for the 8-3 final.
Rice (2-5) went six innings, allowing six earned runs on eight hits with four strikeouts.
Samuel Brunnig pitched the final two frames, allowing one run on one hit.
Guttveg, Howard and
Jake Malone all finished with two hits for the Eagles.
Luis Olivier had his four-game home run streak snapped on Sunday. His four straight games with a long ball was tied with Darryl Knight for the longest in program history.
ERAU will take on the Daytona Tortugas in their annual exhibition game this Tuesday at 6:35 p.m. at Historic Jackie Robinson Ballpark.
The Eagles will be back in SSC action next weekend at Tampa for a three-game set.
