DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. – The Embry-Riddle women's tennis team returned home to face #25 Flagler in a non-conference matchup.
After taking the doubles point, the Eagles came up short in singles competition as Flagler won the match 4-1.
Flagler started the match by picking up a win at No. 2 doubles. Anika Nissen and Lixin Wang defeated the team of
Georgina Wood and
Jillian Hobbs, 6-2. The Blue and Gold answered with wins at No. 1 and No. 2 doubles. Mafalda Sores and
Alexis Marshall kept the Eagles alive with a 6-4 win over Felicitas Runkel and Alessandra Traub.
Itxaso Blanco and
Roberta Krvajica earned the point with a win over Paloma Martinez and Eden Schlagenhauf, 6-4 on court one.
The Saints took control in singles play. Flagler evened the match at one after Blanco was forced to retire due to injury on court one. The visitors took a 2-1 lead in the match and never looked back after Traub defeated Marshall, 6-2, 4-6, 6-1 on court five. Martinez followed with a 5-7, 6-1, 6-4 win over Soares on court six. Nissen clinched the match for Flagler by beating Krvajica 6-4, 3-6, 6-4 on court three. Besides Blanco's injury-shortened match, every singles match was forced to go three sets.
Sabrina Ehrenfort and Wood were unable to finish their singles matches in the clinch-clinch format. Ehrenfort was tied 2-2 in the third set on court four after splitting the first two sets 1-6, 6-4. Wood trailed Wang 3-1 in the third set after splitting the first two sets 5-7, 7-5 on court two.
The Eagles will restart Sunshine State Conference play on Saturday against Eckerd. The match at the Crotty Tennis Complex starts at 12 p.m.
