MELBOURNE, Fla. — The Embry-Riddle (7-10, 3-5) women's tennis team was a unable to rebound after losing the doubles point on Thursday and fell to Florida Tech (10-7, 2-7) 5-2 at the Panthers' DeSoto Tennis Center.
Florida Tech grabbed an early lead with wins at No. 1 and No. 3 doubles. Alahna Reto and Dina Dragoljic started the scoring with a 6-2 win against
Mafalda Soares and
Sabrina Ehrenfort on court three and Maria Escude Patricio and Paloma Vela secured the doubles point with a 6-4 win against
Itxaso Blanco and
Roberta Krvajica at the top spot. The Eagles avoided the doubles sweep when
Georgina Wood and
Alexis Marshall teamed up for a 7-5 win over Maria Chun and Lauren Stuckey at the second position.
Singles play saw three of the six contests go to three sets. The first two matches off the court yielded points for the Panthers as Stuckey downed Marshall 6-1, 6-1 on court five and Escude Patricio topped Wood 6-4, 6-1 on court two.
The next match off the court saw Krvajica hold off Chun 7-5, 7-6 (4) and Soares won a three-setter against Dragoljic (4-6, 6-0, 6-1) at the sixth spot to make it 3-2 FIT.
Playing at the top spot, Blanco took the first set 6-3, but Reto rallied to take the next two frames 6-4, 6-4 and record the clinching point for the Panthers.
Ehrenfort also won her first set, 6-4, suffered a tough 7-6 (2) loss in the second set before dropping the match to Vela 6-2.
The Eagles play their final home match of 2019 at 3:30 p.m. on Monday when they host top-ranked Lynn at the Crotty Tennis Complex.
