DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. – The Embry-Riddle women's lacrosse team's 2019 campaign came to an end on Saturday as the Eagles suffered a 20-8 Sunshine State Conference loss to sixth-ranked Tampa (12-3, 5-1) at the ERAU Lacrosse Field. The Blue and Gold closed out the first winning season in program history with a 10-7 overall record and finished in a three-way tie for fourth place in the final SSC standings with a 2-4 league record.
The Eagles got off to a promising start as
Gillian Greenberg netted the game's first goal just 13 seconds into the contest. The lead was short-lived, however, as Caroline Forester scored the equalizer for Tampa a minute later and the Spartans added three more scores over the next five minutes to open up a 4-1 lead. The Eagles managed three more goals before halftime, but Tampa used two-three goal spurts to take a 12-4 lead into the intermission.
ERAU matched its first-half scoring output in the second half, but Tampa, behind a pair of goals each from Forester and Claire Swanson doubled up the Eagles 8-4 to secure the win.
Forester and Swanson tied with a game high four goals each for a Tampa team that connected on six of their 12 free position shots.
Greenberg,
Mya Watson and
McKenzie Jackson finished with two goals each, while Jackson and
Elizabeth Ninesling each won six draws. The top two scorers in program history, Jackson and Watson capped their sophomore campaigns with 57 and 49 goals, respectively. Jackson is also the Eagles' all-time leader in draw controls won with 262 in her two-year and her 131 draws this season, which also matched her freshman tally, tops the SSC.
