MELBOURNE, Fla. - Four Embry-Riddle baseball players were named to the All-Sunshine State Conference honor roll on Wednesday afternoon as announced by the league office. The Eagles (29-20, 18-12 SSC) had their best season in their NCAA II era and qualified for the 2019 NCAA II National Tournament and will take on Delta State on Thursday in Cleveland, Mississippi.
Seniors
Kirk Sidwell (DH) and
Zach Howard (OF) were joined on the All-SSC first team by sophomore
Garrett Goodall (SP), while junior
Luis Olivier (C) was named to the All-SSC second team.
Sidwell, a native of Windermere, Florida, led the Eagles' offensively during the regular season, hitting a team-best .374 on 71 hits, including 12 doubles, four triples and five homers. Sidwell has driven in 30 runs and has scored 38 times while slugging .558 with a .429 on-base clip. He has registered 21 multi-hit games and ranks in the SSC top-10 in batting average (8th), slugging percentage (9th), hits (3rd), doubles (10th) and triples (4th).
The active NCAA II leader in career home runs with 42, Howard is hitting .313 with a 1.008 OPS as a senior. The Land O'Lakes, Florida native has 56 hits, with 25 of them going for extra-bases (11 doubles, one triple and 13 homers). Howard's 13 long balls leads the SSC, and his .603 slugging percentage is third-best in the conference. The Eagle outfielder has recorded 48 RBIs and 35 runs in 49 games.
It's Howard's second All-SSC accolade of his career, moving up to the first team after being named a second team performer a year ago.
Goodall, hailing from Nanaimo, British Columbia, is in the midst of a breakout year on the mound for the Blue and Gold. The right-hander is 8-2 with a 3.07 ERA in 82.0 innings of work. Goodall has 16 appearances with 11 starts and a 1.27 WHIP. He has struck out 65 batters this season, while opponents are hitting .251 against him. Thus far, Goodall has seven quality starts in his second season for ERAU, with his best outing coming in a complete game, two-hit shutout of Florida Tech on March 23.
Goodall and his brother Liam (2013-16) are the third set of siblings in Embry-Riddle Athletic Department history to earn All-Conference accolades. Liam was a first team All-Sun Conference outfielder in 2014 and 2015. Juan Ortiz Couder (men's tennis) and Paula Ortiz Couder (women's tennis) earned several All-Conference accolades over the Eagle careers, while both Sophia Gustely and Phoebe Gustely claimed All-Peach Belt honors for women's track this season.
Earning second team honors was the Eagles' backstop, Olivier. The Altamonte Springs, Florida native is hitting .352 on 69 hits, including nine doubles and eight home runs. Olivier paces the team with 50 RBIs and has scored 40 runs in 2019, all while catching 47 of the team's 49 games. Olivier has thrown out a conference-leading 22 would-be base stealers and boasts a .988 fielding percentage behind the plate. The junior catcher has handled a pitching staff that has the best ERA (4.25) since joining the NCAA II ranks.
The four Eagles are the 137th, 138th, 139th and 140th ERAU baseball All-Conference selections in the program's 31-year history.
