WEST PALM BEACH, Fla. - Darhius Nunn's layup with two seconds left gave Palm Beach Atlantic an 87-86 win over Embry-Riddle on Wednesday night. The Eagles (14-8, 6-8 SSC) dropped their seventh consecutive road game, despite rallying from 16 down in the second half to lead several times late in the contest against the Sailfish (15-6, 8-5). For the second straight contest free throws proved to be a major difference as the host Sailfish shot 19-for-24 at the free throw line, while ERAU managed just a 7-for-15 effort.
Elijah Jenkins scored 21 points, including the go-ahead three-pointer with 11 seconds to go, but on the ensuing possession, the PBA in-bounder, Nunn, found himself unguarded and after his initial pass, got the ball back immediately, racing to the rack where he made a tough layup going up against
Luka Majstorovic.
The Eagles were without
Romeo Crouch over the final 30 seconds after the junior was whistled for his fifth personal foul on Nunn. Nunn made two free throws to give PBA an 85-83 lead prior to Jenkins hitting his sixth and final trey of the night.
The final 10 minutes of the game was a true back-and-forth affair after the Eagles erased a 16-point deficit over the first 10 minutes of the second period. PBA went up 52-36 with its first bucket of the second half, but the Eagles would out-score the home team 25-10 over the next eight minutes, cutting the deficit to 62-61 at the 11-minute mark.
After PBA went on its own mini-run to go back up six, the visitors scored six straight, and later, took a 73-72 lead on a Crouch triple with seven minutes to play.
Neither team led by more than a possession the rest of the way, with ERAU's biggest lead of the night coming at 80-78 when Crouch made a layup after a Majstorovic steal with four minutes left. Both defenses took over for the next two minutes as neither team would score until Nunn hit a three-pointer at the 2:05 mark.
After PBA went up 83-80 around the one-minute mark,
Nick Heard tied the gme with a three, but those two free throws from Nunn started the final 30 seconds as ERAU dropped to 2-7 on the road on the year. Of the Eagles' seven road setbacks, they have come by an average of just 5.5 points, including three games that were within one possession.
Joining Jenkins with 21 points was Crouch; he also had eight rebounds and three steals.
Chris Murray finished with 17 points on 8-for-8 shooting from the field, also dishing out six assists and grabbing six rebounds. Murray became the first Eagle to go 8-for-8 or better from the field since 2014 when both Reed Ridder and Cesar Pastrana did so.
Nick Heard added 11 points and six rebounds, while Majstorovic had nine boards and four assists.
ERAU has four of its remaining six games at home, including Saturday's 6 p.m. tilt against Barry.
