Women’s Tennis Hands Saginaw Valley State 6-1 Defeat

DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. – The Embry-Riddle women's tennis team recorded its second doubles sweep is as many matches en route to a 6-1 win over Saginaw Valley State, Wednesday at the Crotty Tennis Complex. The Eagles picked up their second win in as many days to improve their overall record to 6-1. Saginaw Valley State moves to 4-11 with the loss.

Georgina Wood and Robert Krvajica put the Eagles on the board with their 6-1 defeat of Joanne Gao and Sara Neves at No. 2 doubles. Three minutes later, the Eagles' top-flight tandem of Itxaso Blanco and Alexis Marshall assured the Eagles of the doubles point by rallying for a 6-3 win over Maddie Miller and Taylor McLaughlin.

The final doubles match off the court saw Sabrina Ehrenfort and Julia Mautner open up a 5-2 advantage at the third spot, but the Cardinals' Nicole Johnson and Gyselle Gutierrez earned a break and a hold to make the score 5-4. With Mautner serving for the match, the Eagles tallied two unanswered points on the way to a 40-30 win in the final game to take the match 6-4.

The first singles match off the court saw Krvajica win the lefty-lefty match-up on court three as she dispatched McLaughlin 6-1, 6-2 to put the Eagles up 2-0. Playing at the sixth spot, Mautner also rolled to a win in her singles contest, downing Johnson 6-1, 6-1.

The Cardinals got their only point of the day at the top singles spot where Miller earned a 6-3, 6-1 win against Blanco.

The clinching point in Wednesday's contest came from Wood. The senior easily downed Gao 6-1 in the first set but had to battle from behind to take the second set 6-4 and win her match at the second position.

Ehrenfort was next off the court and she fended off Gutierrez 6-4, 6-1 at No. 4.

The final singles match to reach completion lasted nearly two and a half hours. Marshall earned a hard-fought 7-5 win in the first set but trailed Neves 5-4 in the second. She broke the Cardinals' No. 5 player to even the score at 5-5, but was broken and then held serve to force a tiebreaker. A fiercely contested tiebreaker saw Marshall come out on top 7-4 to take the set and the match 7-6.

The Eagles' next match will be at 10 a.m. on Saturday when they host Northwood (Mich.) at the Crotty Tennis Complex.
