DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. – The Embry-Riddle women's tennis team rallied from an early deficit to top Tampa in Sunshine State Conference play, Saturday at the Crotty Tennis Complex. Tampa (1-5) won the doubles point, but the Eagles won four of the six singles matches in a contest that lasted three hours and 41 minutes to improve their record to 3-4 on the year.
Doubles play saw
Roberta Krvajica and
Alexis Marshall make quick work of Savannah Williams and Dakota Busch, downing the Tampa duo 6-1 on court two. But the Spartans were able to win the doubles point when Maria Khomchenko and Anina Wilberg topped
Itxaso Blanco and
Mafalda Soares 6-3 on court one, and Corbin Dorsey and Tatianna Harrelson topped
Julia Mautner and
Sabrina Ehrenfort by the same margin on court three.
Blanco was the first to register a point in singles as she dispatched Khomchenko in straight sets 6-3, 6-0 at the No. 1 singles spot. Playing at No. 4 singles, Marshall gave the Blue and Gold its first lead of the afternoon, downing Dorsey 6-3, 6-2.
Harrelson tied the team score at 2-2 with a 7-6 (9-7), 6-0 win over Soares at the sixth spot and Williams reclaimed the lead for the Spartans with a 6-4, 6-2 defeat of Krvajica at No. 2.
The contest at No. 5 singles resulted in the third tie of the day as Mautner defeated Nicholine Palmgren 6-1, 6-4.
The final match off the court was a hard-fought three-set battle between Ehrenfort and Wilberg. Wilberg edged Ehrenfort 7-6 (4) in the first set, but the ERAU junior rallied to take the second set 6-2. Both players held serve through the first seven games of the third set, but in the eighth game, Ehrenfort registered a break to go up 5-3. Serving for the match, Ehrenfort went up 40-30 and won a fierce rally to defeat Wilberg and clinch the win for the Blue and Gold.
The Eagles' next match will be at home on April 6 when they host third-ranked Lynn at the Crotty Tennis Complex.
