ERAU Men’s Tennis Topples No. 12 Florida Southern

DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. – The Embry-Riddle men's tennis team improved its record overall and in Sunshine State Conference play to 4-1 on the year with a 4-3 upset of 12th-ranked Florida Southern (2-2), Sunday at the Crotty Tennis Complex.

The Eagles' No. 1 and No. 2 doubles teams finished within a minute of each other, and each earned a win to secure the doubles point for the Blue and Gold. At No. 1 doubles, the ERAU duo of Juan Ortiz Couder and Luke Paschal downed Tim Becker and Erik Nordblom, and Alexis Guedy and Lucas Bos topped Valentin Hertweck and Pable Salamanca by the same score on court two.

The match at the third doubles position went to a tiebreaker and, in the end, it was the tandem of Alvaro Diaz Rodrigo and Fernando Alonso who pulled out the 7-6 (5) win over Brandon Pham and Brian Pham to complete the doubles sweep for the Eagles.

The first singles match off the court was at the top spot where Ortiz Couder bested Brandon Pham in straight sets, 6-2, 6-3.

The Moccasins got their first point of the day when Becker topped Alonso 7-6 (5) 6-0 on court five.

Playing at the No. 2 spot, Guedy notched an easy first set win against Hertweck, 6-2, but Hertweck didn't go down without a fight, taking Guedy to a tiebreaker in the second set, which the ERAU junior won 6-2, 7-6 (8-6) to put the Eagles up 3-1.

The clincher for the Blue and Gold came at the No. 6 spot, where Tim Loerwink held off Chris Fok Kow in straight sets, 6-3, 6-4.

The last two matches off the court both went to three sets. After falling behind Chase Martin 6-1 in the first, Bos rallied for a 6-3 win in the second and led early in the third, but Martin was able to mount a comeback to take the match with a 7-5 win in the third.

The match at No. 5 singles saw Diaz Rodrigo drop the first set 6-3 to Oscar Sohl. Diaz Rodrigo fell behind 5-0 in the second but the ERAU freshman refused to give up without a fight and battled back to take the second set 7-6 (3). Diaz Rodrigo continued to play hard in the final frame, but in the end, Sohl managed to get the upper hand, winning the super tiebreaker 10-7.

The Eagles' next match will be at No. 3 Saint Leo on April 3 at noon.
