FORT LAUDERDALE, Fla. – Records were shattered in one of the best tournaments by the Embry-Riddle men's golf team to date as the Eagles finished fifth at the Shark Invitational on Tuesday, ahead of No. 18 Florida Southern, No. 23 Lynn and RV Rollins, among others. The field was stocked full of elite competition, featuring four of the top eight teams in the NCAA II and six of the top 25 with one participant in the receiving votes section of the latest national poll. All 12 squads completed three rounds around the par-71, 6,725-yard course at the Grande Oaks Golf Club. Temperatures were in the mid to low 80s with a 10 mph wind from the north.

Two records were obliterated during the third round of play. As a team, the Eagles shot an 862, besting the previous 54-hole mark from the 2004-05 season by 12 strokes. A big contributor to ERAU's record-breaking performance was Ian Aldarondo, who improved on a program record he already held – the lowest individual 54-hole score. Three consecutive rounds of sub-70 scores allowed him to shave another four shots off the record to 205.

The Eagles' 47 birdies were tied for the second-most in the field. Fifteen of those came from Aldarondo, who tied for the most in the 72-player competition.

ERAU recorded it's lowest round in six years (286) during day one, putting the squad in a tie for fifth at the start of the third and final round on Tuesday.

Aldarondo (67-69-69=205) sat second on the individual leaderboard, but eventually moved up into first after notching six sub-par scores on the first 16 holes. However, a bogey on each of the final two holes sent him into a playoff with Nova Southeastern's Will O'Neill. Unfortunately, the senior was defeated, but his second-place result marked his second-consecutive runner-up finish. Most of the San Juan, Puerto Rico, native's success came on par-4s as he led all competitors in scoring average on such holes (3.82, -6)

Michael Faringer (73-74-67=214) came out firing to begin the round. The junior birdied four of his first eight holes which included a stretch of three-straight scores in the red. He climbed up into a tie for 13th by the end of the day, giving him his second top 15 finish in a row. Faringer became just the 12th Eagle in program history to shoot a round at 67 or below and bested his 54-hole tournament career low. He ended in a tie for the third-most pars in the tournament, evidence of his successful consistent play.

A T-21st place showing gave Tiago Barni (71-72-74=217) his best result as an Eagle, both in placement and shot total. He also shot a career-low 71 during round one.

John Triplett hovered in the mid-70s all tournament long as the Port Orange, Florida, native registered scores of 75-76-75 for a 226 total.

A stretch of four birdies in five holes helped Tyler Reese (88-77-78=243) find his groove on day two.

Beau Coenraad competed as an individual for ERAU. The senior used a personal-best 69 in round one to help him finish in a tie for 33rd, his highest placement as a member of the Blue and Gold.

No. 1 Barry (284-283-272=839) blew the field away with a 12-under-par third-round score. No. 4 North Georgia (285-284-287=856) moved past No. 8 Nova Southeastern (283-284-290=857) while No. 5 Georgia Southwestern State (287-288-285=860) just edged the Eagles by two strokes.

Only one more tournament remains on the fall schedule. The Eagles will take a few weeks off before heading to Winter Park, Florida, for the McDonough Cup hosted by Rollins, a tournament Aldarondo also finished second in last season. Play begins on Monday, Oct. 31 and continues into Tuesday, Nov. 1.

The 2022-23 Embry-Riddle Men's Golf season is presented by Tijuana Flats.
