Softball Drops Pair of Games to Begin Eagle Classic

DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. - After 702 days away from home, the Embry-Riddle softball team returned to the newly rebranded Radiology Associates Field with the two-day Eagle Classic. The Eagles dropped a pair of games on Friday, 9-2 to No. 7 Valdosta State and 8-7 to No. 14 Auburn - Montgomery.

Game 1 | Embry-Riddle 2, No. 7 Valdosta State - 9

Both starting pitchers dominated the opening first four innings as Embry-Riddle's Kelsi Collins and Valdosta State's Samantha Richards combined for 11 strikeouts and allowed no runs on four hits through that span.

However, in the fifth inning, the Blazers broke the stalemate with a two-run home run and an RBI double to go up 3-0 and begin an explosion of offense. The Eagles fought back in the bottom of the inning when Valdosta State's third baseman attempted to toss the ball back to the pitcher but threw the ball over her head, which allowed Maggie Scott to score.

The Blazers tacked on three more runs in the sixth due to three hits and two walks in the frame to put Embry-Riddle's deficit up to 6-1. Lauren Latoria hit Mia Macchia in with a triple to close the gap to 6-2, but Valdosta State's Nikki Penington sent a ball over the left field fence for a three-run home run an inning later to seal the game.

Four different Eagles (ReAnne Drayton, Lia Johnson, Latoria, and Scott) recorded a hit in the contest. Both Macchia and Scott crossed home plate, and Latoria was the only member of the Blue and Gold to tally an RBI.

Game 2 | Embry-Riddle 7, No. 14 Auburn-Montgomery 8

Despite letting up a solo home run in the top of the first, Embry-Riddle started their second game of the day with a bang as the first four batters reached base, which began with Scott getting on due to a Warhawk error. Johnson followed with a single to put two on with no outs. Mahaliyah Sandridge then smacked a ball to the wall in center field for a two-RBI double.

Gigi Auricchio kept the scoring going with her second RBI triple of the season to plate Sandridge. Later in the inning, with runners on the corners, Serenity Jaenichen occupied the defense's attention with an attempt to steal second. Auricchio sprinted toward home and used the distraction to score and give the Eagles a 4-1 advantage.

Embry-Riddle was in good shape after adding a fifth run in the third inning when Johnson touched home plate after a single from Sandridge, but Auburn-Montgomery's bats woke up in the fifth inning with a single, two doubles, a triple, and two errors to plate six runs and take the lead for the first time since the first frame.

A wild pitch in the sixth allowed a Warhawk to score to give Auburn-Montgomery an 8-5 lead, but Embry-Riddle tightened up the contest in the bottom of the inning. With the bases loaded, Karina Ortiz-Munoz used her patience to draw a walk, which scored Auricchio. The deficit was then reduced to one run when Drayton sped home on a fielder's choice. With just one out and the bases still full, Scott sent a dribbler back to the pitcher. As the potential tying run, Delaney Morgan raced toward home to try and beat the throw, but was called out by only a few steps.

The Eagles were unable to muster anything in the seventh, leading to an 8-7 defeat.

Auricchio, Johnson, and Sandridge led the team with two hits each with Auricchio and Johnson leading in runs as well with a pair. Sandridge recorded a team-best three RBIs.

The Eagle Classic concludes tomorrow with four games. Embry-Riddle faces Auburn-Montgomery at 12:30 p.m. and then closes out the tournament against Valdosta State at 5:30 p.m.
