Crusaders Stun Men's Lacrosse in OT, 13-12

TIGERVILLE, South Carolina - Despite a four-goal lead with five-and-a-half minutes left in regulation, the Embry-Riddle Eagles dropped their first road game of the 2022 season, 13-12 in overtime at North Greenville on Friday night. The Eagles (2-2) saw a 12-8 lead evaporate as the Crusaders (3-2) scored the final five goals of the night, including three in the final 90 seconds of the fourth, to emerge with the overtime victory.

Coleman Jacobs had another huge offensive night for the Eagles, scoring five times on 10 shots, while Peter Abbes added a pair of goals and two assists to the Eagle effort. In goal, Lucas Fraser made 12 saves against 25 shots on goal.

The first period did not go the Eagles way as NGU jumped out to a 4-1 lead after the quarter, the lone ERAU score coming from Jacobs. However, the second period was all Blue and Gold, starting with a Luke Squire goal a few minutes into the quarter.

Jacobs' second score made it a one-goal game, and after the Crusaders responded with one goal at the 11:44 mark, the Eagles scored the three of the next four, starting with a Connor Bullock goal, then an Abbes score, and finally Joe Anderson's goal with 1:13 on the clock tied the game at 6-6.

The Crusaders had a shot saved by Fraser with 10 seconds left, and the Eagles finished the half with a beautiful bevy of passes that led to Jacobs finding the back of the net as time expired to give ERAU its first lead of the contest.

Coming out of the break, NGU briefly tied the game before Abbes and Jacobs pushed the Eagle lead to 9-7, and those would be the only goals scored in the third quarter as the defenses stood firm.

Jacob Morin's man-down goal at the 14:24 mark of the second half gave the Blue and Gold its biggest lead of the night up until that point, 10-7.

Gage Poindexter found Marcus Needham for a score with just under 12 to play, and when Christian Hofer registered his second assist of the game on Jacobs' final goal at the 5:29 mark to give the Eagles a 12-8 lead, it appeared ERAU had the game in hand.

A quick score after a faceoff win by the Crusaders, cut the deficit to three, but the Eagles still held a multi-goal lead with two minutes to play. Starting with a goal at the 1:30 mark, NGU rattled off three goals in the span of 39 seconds, the final tally knotting the game at 12-12 with 51 seconds left.

As the game moved to overtime, the Eagles had first crack at winning the night, with a couple of shots a few minutes into the extra period, and then the home team was called for a penalty, giving ERAU an extra-man opportunity. However, an Eagle turnover eventually led to a man-down goal by the Crusaders with 1:42 left in the OT period, resulting in the 13-12 final.

Embry-Riddle will look to bounce back on Sunday when the Eagles take on Anderson at 2 p.m. in Anderson, S.C.
