Softball Sweeps Sharks on Saturday

DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. - The Embry-Riddle softball team rode the wave of momentum from Friday's walk-off win into Saturday and took both games from Nova Southeastern (6-7, 0-3 Sunshine State Conference) to secure the sweep.

This marks the first time since the opening conference series against Lynn on Feb. 14-15, 2020, that the Eagles (7-4, 5-1 SSC) swept an SSC opponent.

GAME 1 | Embry-Riddle 1, Nova Southeastern 0

Offense was hard to find in game one. Neither squad reached base through the first two innings. Starting pitcher Mallory Kinahan was dominant as the freshman retired the first eight batters in order, half of which were via the strikeout. Karina Ortiz-Munoz provided some acrobatic defense in the second when she lunged at a low-hanging foul ball near Embry-Riddle's dugout to snag the third out.

Both teams put a runner in scoring position in the third, but neither capitalized. That was the only scoring threat over the next three frames until the bottom of the sixth when Maggie Scott slapped a single to center field, and Lia Johnson followed with a ground ball that rolled past the diving shortstop to put two on with one out. After the next batter popped out to third, ReAnne Drayton stepped in the batter's box and came up clutch again. She got a base knock to center to score Scott in what would be the only run of the game.

Kinahan (3-2) was nearly perfect in the circle. She allowed only one hit over seven innings pitched for her second consecutive shutout.

Drayton, Johnson, and Scott each accumulated a hit, all in the sixth inning.

GAME 2 | Embry-Riddle 5, Nova Southeastern 3

Game two of the doubleheader had more offensive action than the first two contests of the series combined, as the two teams tallied eight runs on 14 hits. Immediately, the Sharks went to work with three hits over the first four batters. Two singles and a double put Nova Southeastern up early 2-0.

In the bottom half of the inning, Embry-Riddle responded when Drayton's sacrifice bunt brought Johnson home to cut the deficit to 2-1.

The Sharks threatened to go back up by two runs in the second, but first baseman Ortiz-Munoz made a diving grab on a ground ball, got to her feet, and threw to home in time to get the base-runner out.

One inning later, Scott flew through the air and made a superhuman grab to rob the Sharks of a hit. In the bottom of the frame, Scott singled and stole second before Johnson hit the speedy center fielder home with her own base knock. Mahaliyah Sandridge then pushed Johnson across the plate to give Embry-Riddle a 3-2 advantage.

The lead grew to 4-2 in the fourth as Kelsey Kressler touched home plate on Scott's second single of the game. NSU added a run in the fifth, but the Eagles received some breathing room in the sixth thanks to a sacrifice fly to right field by Scott to plate Ortiz-Munoz for a 5-3 lead, which was enough to secure the win.

Kelsi Collins (4-2) averaged a strikeout per inning en route to her fourth complete game of the year. She allowed two earned runs on six hits and two walks over seven innings pitched.

Johnson shined at the plate going 2-for-4 with two runs and an RBI while Scott picked up two hits in three at-bats with a run and two RBI.

Next up for Embry-Riddle is the first road SSC series of the season as the Eagles travel to play Palm Beach Atlantic on March 4-5.
