Scott Breaks Multiple Records in Softball’s Doubleheader Split With No. 20 Lions

Commerce, Texas - The Embry-Riddle softball team closed out its spring break trip with a win and a loss against No. 20 Texas A&M-Commerce on Wednesday. The Eagles took game one 6-5 for their second win of the season against a ranked opponent but dropped game two 21-3.

This was the first-ever meeting between the two teams.

After setting the program record for most starts in a career yesterday, Maggie Scott broke two more in the second game of the doubleheader. Once she stepped into the batter's box in the top of the first, Scott registered her 175th game played, passing Robi Zimmerman for most all time. Then in the third, the senior swiped her 79th career bag to break the record held by Anna Battison.

GAME 1 | Embry-Riddle - 6, Texas A&M-Commerce - 5

Just like yesterday, Mahaliyah Sandridge flexed her muscles with a home run to start the contest, her third of the season.

The Eagles' (11-7) lead didn't last long, however, as the Lions (22-6) scored a run in each of the opening two innings despite the first two batters being retired on both occasions. Texas A&M-Commerce loaded the bases on a single and two walks before scoring on a wild pitch to even the score in the first. Then in the second, an Embry-Riddle throwing error led to an additional run for the home team.

In the third, the Eagles turned into a well-oiled hitting machine with the first six batters reaching base. With the bases juiced, Scott slapped a hit through the hole on the right side of the diamond to plate a pair of runs. ReAnne Drayton continued the surge with her own two-RBI hit - a double to deep center - to push the lead to 5-2. Lauren Latoria capped off the scoring with a bloop single to right to score Drayton.

Yet again, the Lions struck with two outs when Leo Terry singled to left to bring a run home just ahead of the throw. Catcher Isabelle Bonn then threw out a baserunner attempting to advance to third for the final out.

For the fourth time in the first five innings, Texas A&M-Commerce added to their total in the run column in the fifth with two runs from a wild throw and double down the left field line. The inning ended in similar fashion to the fourth when new catcher Ashlyn MacVeigh threw a Lion out attempting to swipe third.

Texas A&M-Commerce nearly tied the game with a runner on second with no outs, but starting pitcher Kelsi Collins escaped with no harm done after retiring the following three batters, two of which were strikeouts, to keep the 6-5 lead.

Collins (7-3) held on to earn the win after allowing five runs (three earned), on seven hits and five walks with five strikeouts.

Sandridge moved her hitting streak to five games going 3-for-4 with two runs and an RBI in game one. Drayton also picked up a pair of hits as well as two RBI.

GAME 2 | Embry-Riddle - 3, Texas A&M-Commerce - 21

A three-run home run in the bottom of the first inning gave Texas A&M-Commerce an early lead, which was almost completely erased one frame later when Drayton smashed her first long ball of the season for Embry-Riddle's first run. Later in the inning, Karina Ortiz-Munoz doubled down the first base line to bring Kelsey Kressler home and the Eagles within one.

That would be as close as the Blue and Gold would get as the Lions opened the floodgates with 18 runs from the bottom of the second to the bottom of the fourth.

The Eagles did manage to tack on a run in the third with an RBI double from Drayton, but that concluded their scoring.

Drayton was a bright spot in game two going 2-for-2 at the plate with a run and two RBI.

Embry-Riddle flies back to Florida to begin a seven-game homestand starting with a doubleheader against Hillsdale on Saturday, March 19 at 4 p.m.
