Softball Shuts Down Chargers with Pair of Shutouts

DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. - The Embry-Riddle softball team's pitchers completely dominated Hillsdale on Saturday, shutting out the Chargers in both games and allowing a combined six hits. The Eagles (13-7) mercy-ruled Hillsdale (10-16) in game one with a 10-0 win in five innings and completed the sweep with a 2-0 victory in game two.

It was just the second series all-time between the two programs. Embry-Riddle also swept the Chargers back in 2020.

GAME 1 | Embry-Riddle - 10, Hillsdale - 0 (5 Inn.)

Starting pitcher Kelsi Collins breezed through the Hillsdale's lineup early on allowing just one hit through the first three innings and striking out five, four of which were recorded consecutively over the second and third innings.

It was an offensive explosion in the third inning as the Eagles hit for the cycle to score seven runs in the frame. Mahaliyah Sandridge and Karina Ortiz-Munoz notched RBI triples while Isabelle Bonn got her first home run of the season with a three-run shot to right to end the scoring. Additionally, Maggie Scott received an RBI on a double while ReAnne Drayton picked one up on a base knock.

Three more runs were tacked on in the fourth. Sandridge led off with a double and later scored on a sacrifice fly from Drayton. Then, Lauren Latoria used a rare two-RBI sac bunt to move Embry-Riddle's lead to 10-0, tying the the season-high mark for most runs in a game.

Kelsi Collins (8-3) only pitched four innings to receive the win. She allowed just one hit and one walk with five strikeouts.

Lia Johnson, Ortiz-Munoz, and Sandridge each tallied multiple hits. Scott and Sandridge led in runs (2) while Bonn racked up the most RBI (3).

GAME 2 | Embry-Riddle - 2, Hillsdale - 0

Whereas the first game was controlled by the offense, the Eagle defense was the headline in game two.

After Mallory Kinahan retired Hillsdale in order in the first, Embry-Riddle grabbed the lead in the bottom of the inning. With two outs, Scott used a bunt to get on base. Drayton then found a hole in right field to put two Eagles on. Ortiz-Munoz sent a ground ball toward the first baseman, who misplayed it and allowed Scott to score.

For the next three innings, Kinahan and the Embry-Riddle defense didn't allow more than one Charger to reach base each inning.

However, Hillsdale threatened in the fifth with two runners in scoring position with two outs. Fortunately, Kinahan shut the door by striking out the next batter. The freshman did the exact same thing in the sixth to preserve the lead before the Eagles found an insurance run in the bottom of the inning. Three straight singles allowed Kelsey Kressler to bring Ortiz-Munoz home on a hit into right for a second run.

In the seventh, the Chargers put the tying run on first after two base hits. Elaine Townley sent a shallow fly ball to center, but Scott slid in to catch the ball just in time and save the game.

Seven different Eagles notched a hit in the game including Mia Macchia, who got her first hit of the season - a double in the second inning.

Kinahan (5-4) picked up her third shutout of the season and struck out six, tying her season-best.

Embry-Riddle continues its seven-game homestand with a non-conference doubleheader against Mercy on Wednesday at 4 p.m.
