Softball Rallies in Sixth Inning to Win 4-3 Over Mercy

DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. – The Embry-Riddle softball team came from behind late to defeat Mercy 4-3 in the first-ever meeting between the two programs. A two-run bottom of the sixth helped the Eagles (14-7) overcome a one-run deficit to win for the seventh time in the last eight games. Both teams were scheduled to play a doubleheader, but an injury to an umpire forced the cancellation of game two.

Despite only scoring two runs or less in nine of the previous ten games, the Mavericks (2-19) plated a pair in the first inning on three hits, a walk, and a hit batter.

Embry-Riddle pushed a runner to third in each of the first two innings but could not break into the scoring column until the third when Mahaliyah Sandridge sent a screaming shot over the left field fence for her team-high fourth home run of the season. Lia Johnson followed with a deep double to center over the head of the center fielder, who was playing shallow. Maggie Scott then tied the game at 2-2 with her base knock up the middle.

The following two frames were dominated by solid pitching and fielding. No hits were allowed while the two starting pitchers, Kelsi Collins and Alexi Benson, recorded three strikeouts combined.

Mercy began the sixth inning with a double. A groundout and sacrifice bunt pushed the baserunner to home to break the 2-2 stalemate.

In the bottom half of the inning, Scott managed to get to third base as the tying run with two outs. Lauren Latoria came up clutch with a perfectly placed ball into right field near the foul line. Scott scored to tie the game and Latoria raced to third after the right fielder allowed the ball to escape past her to the fence. The scoring did not stop there, though, as Karina Ortiz-Munoz sent a bloop single barely over the outstretched arm of the shortstop into left, allowing Latoria to put the Eagles ahead 4-3 when she touched the plate.

The Mavericks attempted to mount a rally in the seventh with the two batters getting hit by pitches, but Collins struck out the final two to secure the victory.

Collins (9-3) won her fifth start in a row by limiting Mercy to three runs on six hits and two walks on top of seven whiffs.

Latoria and Johnson led offensively with a 2-for-3 mark at the dish with a run. Latoria also contributed an RBI while Johnson added her 16th and 17th stolen bases of the year. Additionally, Scott increased her hit streak to a team-high eight games.

Embry-Riddle resumes conference play with a three-game series against Eckerd beginning Friday, March 25 at 6 p.m. at Radiology Associates Field.
