No. 25 Softball Matches Two Program Records in Offensive Explosion Against Eckerd

DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. - Everything was going right at the plate for the Embry-Riddle softball team on Friday in its series-opening game against Eckerd. The 25th-ranked Eagles (15-7, 7-3 Sunshine State Conference) tied the program's single-game records in hits (18) and home runs (3) while recording a season-high in runs with a 12-4 victory over the Tritons (16-11, 5-8 SSC).

The victory moved Embry-Riddle to 14-2 all-time against Eckerd with six of the last seven wins coming by four or more runs.

Half of the Tritons' runs scored in the first inning as Eckerd was poised to have a strong game offensively. A leadoff double immediately put a runner in scoring position. One ground ball and wild pitch later, the Tritons were on the board. An RBI single then gave Eckerd a quick 2-0 lead.

The Eagles responded instantly in the bottom half of the frame, starting with a double from Mahaliyah Sandridge. Then, a two-run moonshot to left by ReAnne Drayton evened the score.

After starting pitcher Kelsi Collins struck out the side in the top of the second, Embry-Riddle doubled its score with a two-RBI single from Lia Johnson. The right fielder also showed off in the field with a sliding catch on her knees one half-inning later.

Fireworks went off in the bottom of the third as the Eagles used six hits, including a pair of long balls from Isabelle Bonn and Sandridge, to jump ahead 9-2.

Following a rare inning of inactivity in the fourth, the Tritons attempted to chip into Embry-Riddle's commanding lead with their own two-run home run. However, the Eagles got one back in the bottom half of the inning when a single from Maggie Scott brought Bonn home.

Up 10-4, Embry-Riddle triggered the mercy rule in the sixth when Savannah Brockenbrough and Karina Ortiz-Munoz touched the plate on base knocks by Kelsey Kressler and Johnson to end the contest early.

Nine different Eagles recorded a hit in the game and seven notched more than one. Lauren Latoria (3-for-4) and Kressler (3-for-4, 2 runs, 2 RBI) led the way at the plate while Johnson (2-for-5) accumulated the most RBI (3).

Collins (10-3) won her sixth game in a row after limiting Eckerd to four runs on five hits with seven whiffs.

Both teams return to Radiology Associates Field on Saturday to conclude the series with a doubleheader at noon.
